CHARLOTTE, NC – Women’s tennis traveled to Charlotte, N.C. to face off against the 49ers Thursday afternoon. The Terriers kept their composure after losing the doubles point and battled back to win 4-3. Sarah Evans and Emilia Milovanovic both extended their singles win streak to four with wins today and helped the Terriers grab two team points. Haley Baird and Julia Paulson also grabbed wins in singles play to add the other two points and give Coach Hangstefer’s squad the win. The Terriers improve their overall record to 6-3 as they enter conference play against Georgia Southern, February 26th. The 49ers drop to a 6-4 record on the season.
The 49ers grabbed the early advantage after winning two of the three doubles matches. Sarah Evans and Julia Paulson were the lone pair to win their doubles match. They played Iveta Guneva and Emmanuelle Briant, defeating the pair easily 8-1. Evans and Paulson tallied their fifth doubles win as a pair, which ties them for first on the team with doubles partners, Guinn Garcia and Haley Baird.
Garcia and Baird were unable to win their doubles match, losing to Alexandra Zinn and Andrea Rivera at the No. 1 position. Charlotte’s Gabi Vergara and Anna Ekelund finished out the doubles play, beating Emilia Milovanovic and Samantha Sullivan, 8-5, at the No. 3 slot to earn the doubles point.
In singles, Milovanovic took her match to three sets and came out on top over Zinn. The French native lost the first set but completely dominated the second and third sets, beating her competition at the No. 1 spot, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0. Milovanovic currently leads the team in singles wins with eight. She has only lost one singles match during the season.
“We are very excited about the win because it was a tough win,” commented Milovanovic after the match. “It was great to have a win on the road and we are really excited about the beginning of conference play.”
Garcia lost her singles match at the No. 2 spot, ending a three game win streak in singles. Her match against Rivera finished 6-2, 6-1. Baird posted a win against Vergara at the No. 3 position. She beat her opposition in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. The senior captain has five singles wins on the year.
Evans faced Briant at the No. 4 position. She earned her fourth singles win in a row and seventh singles win of the year, beating the 49er in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Paulson finished in the same fashion after beating her competition, Ekelund, in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Cox took her match to three sets against Guneva at the No. 6 position. She won the first set 6-3, but lost the next two, 6-0 and 6-4.
The Terriers open conference play next against Georgia Southern, February 26th. The match is at home in Reeves Tennis Center and is set to start at 12:00 p.m.
