Vess Paves Way for Terriers in First Outdoor Meet

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Led by Andy Vess’s meet record breaking 53.95m throw in the javelin at the Palmetto Classic, the Wofford men’s and women’s track and field team opened their outdoor season with 11 top ten finishers.

Vess’s toss, which was also a personal best for the senior, earned him the only first place finish in the meet for the Terriers.  

Other notable finishes on the men’s side, was Joe Bailey, who competed in the final event of the night under lights in the high jump.  Bailey cleared 1.92m to finish in third place and snap the school record.   .The 4x400m relay team Mavrick Harris, Chase West, Trey Parker and Phillip Spencer, who broke the school record with a time of 3:34.61 to finish fifth  .West in the 400m with a time of 51.93 to finish in fourth place, and Harris took fifth in the mile run with a time of 4:33.07.

On the women’s side, Katie Kessler set a school record in the 800m run with a 2:18.10 to finish in second place. The 4x400m relay team of Kessler, Caitlin Dodd, Alyssa Burket and Emily Gothberg broke the school record with a 4:08.75.  Tiffani Bebe also snapped the school record with a 3.05m in the pole vault, and Kaitlin Brown broke the school record in the high jump with a height of 1.54m.  Sam Hughes finished in four place of the 3,000m with a time of 11:08.88, while Caroline Liddy took fifth with a time of 20:29.71 in 5,000m.  Ashleigh Padgett finished in fifth with a distance of 29.56m in the javelin to round out the Terrier top five finishers.

The Terriers will return to the track March 18 through March 19 at UNC Charlotte for their next meet.
