Baseball Falls 5-1 At Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – In the first road game of the season for the Wofford baseball team, the Terriers out-hit Clemson in a 5-1 loss at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The score was tied at one after four innings, but two unearned runs by the Tigers in the bottom of the fifth gave them the lead.

Wofford is now 6-3 on the season, while Clemson is 6-1. The Terriers were led by James Foster and Clark Wise with two hits each. The Tigers were led by Brad Miller with one hit and two RBIs. Clemson is ranked as high as fourth in the nation in this week’s polls. The teams combined to leave 21 runners on base.

The Terriers opened the game with a hit by James Foster and he moved to second on a stolen base, but was left on third base at the end of the inning. Clemson left two on base in the bottom of the first. Neither team had a base runner in the second inning. Wofford had singles from Alex Lee and James Foster in the top of the third, but was unable to score a run.

Clemson moved two runners into scoring position in the bottom of the third, but stranded both. The Terriers had Mac Doyle reach on an error and Konstantine Diamaduros walk in the top of the forth and a sacrifice bunt by Josh McKinney moved the runners to second and third. Ground out by Landon Bennett scored Doyle for a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Spence Keiboom was hit by a pitch and was driven in on a single to center field by Jon McGibbon to make it a 1-1 game. Clark Wise added a triple in the top of the fifth for the Terriers. In the bottom of the fifth, Clemson opened with Chris Epps reaching third on an error. He was driven in on a sacrifice fly to left field by Brad Miller to take a 2-1 lead. The Tigers added another unearned run for a 3-1 advantage at the end of five.

The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but a double play ended the scoring chance. Wofford added two base runners in the top of the sixth on walks and added a bunt single by Clark Wise to load the bases. A strikeout ended the inning with all three runners left on base. In the top of the eighth, Wofford added hits by Konstantine Diamaduros and Landon Bennett, but the Terriers left two runners on base.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Tigers added a run on an RBI single by Brad Miller for a 4-1 lead and with a runner caught in a run-down between first and second, Chris Epps scored from third to take a 5-1 advantage. The Terriers went down in order in the top of the ninth to end the game.

Wofford starter Gus White (0-1) threw five innings and allowed two hits and three runs, only one of which was earned. Pete Noordsy went an inning with one hit allowed. Bobby Streisel threw 1.1 innings and allowed one run on one hit with a strikeout. Cash Collins allowed two hits and one run in a third of an inning and Eric Eck got the final strikeout.

For the Tigers, starter Justin Sarratt went four innings and allowed three hits and one run with two strikeouts. Kevin Pohle (1-1) threw 2.2 innings and allowed three hits. Jonathan Meyer went 1.2 innings and allowed two hits with three strikeouts. Joseph Moorefield picked up the final two outs in the ninth.

The Terriers host Pittsburgh in a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and continuing Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Wofford will travel to second-ranked Vanderbilt on Wednesday, March 8.
