NASHVILLE, TENN. -- The No. 2 Vanderbilt Commodores handed the Wofford Terriers a 12-1 loss Tuesday night at Hawkins Field in nonconference baseball game.
The Terriers were limited to five hits and fanned 14 times, while the Commodores scattered 12 hits. Wofford also committed four costly errors resulting in four unearned runs.
Vanderbilt got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning with two unearned runs. A two out walk by Aaron Westlake and a double by Jason Esposito set up the inning. Conrad Gregor reached on a Terrier error that plated both Westlake and Esposito to give the Commodores the 2-0 lead.
Vandy would add a run in the bottom of the third inning when Esposito was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a Gregor walk and scored on two wild pitches to make it 3-0.
In the fourth the Terriers threatened as Clark Wise recorded the Terriers first hit of the ball game. Mac Doyle followed with a single advancing Wise to third and Doyle advanced to second on the throw. However both runners were stranded at second and third.
Wofford’s only run of the game came when David Roney tripled with one out in the top of the fifth and scored on a Vanderbilt balk.
The Commodores erupted in the bottom of the fourth with four runs. They had three hits in the inning and were aided by two Terrier errors that extended the inning.
Vanderbilt would add their final five runs in the seventh inning sending 11 batters to the plate. They scattered six hits, none of which went for extra bases.
Wofford had five different players record a hit in the game -- Wise, Doyle, Konstantine Diamaduros, Roney and Matt Moore. Moore doubled in the seventh and Roney’s triple were the only Terrier extra base hits.
The Commodores were led offensively by Anthony Gomez, who was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Westlake was 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Esposito had two hits in four plate appearances and the team’s only extra base hit, a double in the first inning.
Wofford will return to the diamond Friday as they begin a five game set against Harvard at Russell C. King.
