CHARLESTON, SC – Wofford women’s tennis traveled to Charleston, S.C. Tuesday afternoon to face the Memphis Tigers on neutral ground. The Terriers posted their first neutral site loss of the season against Memphis, falling 6-1 to the Tigers. Julia Paulson was the lone Terrier to grab a point, winning her singles match in three sets. The victory puts her tied for the team-lead in singles wins with nine.
The Terriers move to 8-5 (1-0 SoCon) on the season and drop to a 2-1 neutral site record. Memphis surpasses .500 on the season, improving to 7-6.
Haley Baird and Guinn Garcia opened up the afternoon with a win in doubles after facing Courtney Collins and Kelly Gray. The duo beat their competition 8-6 at the top spot and improved their doubles record to 8-5, recording the most doubles wins as a pair on the team.
Memphis grabbed the doubles point after winning the other two doubles matches. Memphis’s Kathleen Hawkins and Mariya Slupska defeated Wofford’s Sarah Evans and Julia Paulson 8-6 and Wofford’s Emilia Milovanovic and Samantha Sullivan lost to Andrea Arques-Garcia and Stefanie Mikesz 8-0.
In singles, Paulson had the most success at the No. 5 spot. The freshman took her match against Arques-Garcia to three sets and turned the heat on late, not allowing Arques-Garcia a single game in the last set. Paulson grabbed her team-high ninth singles win after beating Arques-Garcia 6-1, 4-6, 6-0. Paulson currently has the best singles record on the team with a 9-3 record.
The Tigers won the remainder of the singles matches, grabbing a 6-1 victory over the Terriers.
Coach Hangstefer’s team will return to Reeves Tennis Center for their next match against Western Carolina. The contest is the second Southern Conference match-up of the season and is set to start at 3:00 p.m. on March 16th.
