BOONE, N.C. – The Wofford baseball team was defeated 3-1 by Appalachian State on Friday afternoon at Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium. At first pitch the temperature was 36 degrees with snow flurries and gusting wind.
Wofford is now 14-13 on the season and 2-5 in the SoCon. Appalachian State is 13-13 overall and 2-8 in conference play. The Terriers were led by Mac Doyle two hits, including a home run. Jack Myers led the Mountaineers with three hits and an RBI.
Each team had one hit in the first inning. Wofford added a hit in the top of the second. In the bottom of the second Zack Briggs had a double, which was followed by a single from Preston Troutman. James Foster and Mac Doyle had singles and Konstantine Diamaduros walked to load the bases with one out in the top of the third for the Terriers, but two strikeouts ended the scoring threat.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jack Myers led off with a single and Jeremy Dowdy walked for the Mountaineers. After advancing on a sacrifice bunt, a sacrifice fly by Zack Briggs scored the first run of the day. A single through the left side by Hector Crespo drove in a run for a 2-0 lead.
Mac Doyle hit his eighth home run of the season in the top of the fifth over the left fence to make it a 2-1 game. Tyler Zupcic led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A single by Trey Holmes scored a run as Appalachian State took a 3-1 advantage.
The teams combined to have only one base runner in the sixth and seventh innings. Appalachian State had two runners on in the bottom of the eighth, but both were left on base. In the top of the ninth, Landon Bennett and Stephen Cantrell walked to give the Terriers the tying runs on base, but both were left on base for a 3-1 final.
Wofford starter Cash Collins (5-1) went 6.2 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Ryan Traylor threw the final 1.1 innings and allowed one hit.
Appalachian State starter Ryan Arrowood (4-1) threw eight innings and allowed only one run on six hits with ten strikeouts. Taylor Miller walked two in the ninth and had one strikeout, but did not allow a hit or run for his fifth save of the season.
The three-game series at Appalachian State will continue on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and conclude on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
