SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women’s tennis team played in their final match of the 2011 season against the No. 1 ranked team in the Southern Conference, College of Charleston, Friday afternoon. Before the match, Wofford’s two graduating seniors, Emilia “Frenchie” Milovanovic and Haley Baird, were honored for their time with the women’s tennis program.
During the match, College of Charleston took control of doubles and singles play after winning all the matches played at Reeves Tennis Center. The Cougars went home with a 7-0 win against the Terriers.
Wofford drops to 2-8 in the Southern Conference and wraps up the season with an overall 10-14 record.
The No. 71 nationally ranked Cougars improve to 17-7 on the year and stay unbeaten in the Southern Conference with a 9-0 record. College of Charleston currently sits at the top of the Southern Conference and will enter the Southern Conference as the number one seed.
In doubles, College of Charleston swept each match to win the doubles point. Wofford’s Sarah Evans and Julia Paulson put up the best fight on court No. 2, forcing the match to a tie-breaker. The Terrier duo trailed the entire match by one game, and then forced the match to a 7-7 tie-breaker. In the tie-breaker, CoC came out on top with a close 7-5 finish.
CoC mirrored the doubles results and swept the singles matches as well. Paulson had the strongest match after taking her singles match to three sets. The freshman came out on fire, winning the first set 6-2, but gave up the final two sets 6-4, 6-2 to CoC’s Kinsey Casey.
After winning each match, CoC came out victorious with a 7-0 finish.
Wofford's next match will be at the Southern Conference tournament held in Chattanooga, Tenn., April 20th. The opponent depends on results from the rest of this weekend.
2011 Seniors
Haley Baird
Haley is a native of Irmo, South Carolina. The 2011 season marks Haley’s fourth year with the Wofford women’s tennis program. Haley has been a critical part to the team in her four years due to her leadership and work-ethic. She has been a starter all four years and has combined for 32 singles wins throughout her career. Haley has also tallied 29 total doubles wins during her four years with the Terriers. In addition, Haley was the 2011 team-captain. During her time at Wofford, Haley has been honored with multiple academic awards, including: All-Southern Conference Academic team, Southern Conference Honor Roll and the Southern Conference Commissioner’s Medal for outstanding academic achievement.
Emilia “Frenchie” Milovanovic
Frenchie is a native of Paris, France. She joined the Wofford women’s tennis family this past year after transferring from USC Upstate and has been a vital part of the women’s tennis team during the 2011 season. Frenchie filled into the number one singles position upon her arrival and has tallied eleven wins so far on the season. She has combined with multiple teammates in doubles play to grab ten doubles wins on the year. Overall in her career, Frenchie combines for 119 wins in singles and doubles play. She tallies 54 total singles wins and 65 total doubles wins in her tennis career. Frenchie is an outstanding student as well and was honored with Atlantic-Sun Academic Awards during her time at USC Upstate
