BOONE, N.C. – On a cold and blustery Saturday afternoon, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 6-2 by Appalachian State at Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium. The Terriers scored twice in the first inning, but the Mountaineers scored the next six runs to win game two of the weekend series.
Wofford is now 14-14 on the season and 2-6 in the SoCon. Appalachian State is 14-13 overall and 3-8 in conference play. The Terriers had five players with one hit each and Konstantine Diamaduros and Josh McKinney had RBIs. The Mountaineers were led by Trey Holmes with two RBIs. Both teams left seven players on base.
For Wofford in the top of the first, Josh Hyman reached on a walk and moved to second on an error. A single through the right side by Konstantine Diamaduros enabled Hyman to score as he slid under the tag at home plate. A double by Josh McKinney scored Diamaduros for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Tyler Zupcic reached on an error and then Trey Holmes hit a home run over the left fence to tie the game at two.
Appalachian State had two runners reach base on walks in the bottom of the third. A single to deep center field by Jeremy Dowdy added a run for a 3-2 lead. After Wofford went in order in the top of the fourth, the Mountaineers opened their half of the inning with an error and a single for two runners on base with nobody out. A wild pitch allowed one runner to score and an RBI single from Jack Myers made it a 5-2 game.
In the bottom of the fifth, Zack Briggs hit a double and he was driven home on a triple by Preston Troutman to increase the lead to 6-2. Wofford had two runners on base in the top of the seventh, but both were left on base.
Appalachian State opened the bottom of the eighth with a single by Preston Troutman and he moved to third on a fielding error, but three straight outs ended the scoring chance. In the top of the ninth, Wofford managed one hit by Stephen Cantrell, but he was left on base for a 6-2 final score.
Wofford starter Drew Sheridan (1-3) went 3.1 innings and allowed five runs on five hits, but only two runs were earned. Brandon Yarusi threw 4.2 innings and allowed one run on six hits with three strikeouts.
Appalachian State starter Nathan Hyatt (3-4) threw 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts. David Port went the final 2.1 innings and allowed only one hit.
The three-game series at Appalachian State will conclude on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. On Tuesday the Terriers will travel to Duke for a 6:00 p.m. game before heading to Elon next weekend.
