CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The Wofford women’s tennis team was searching for a championship run as they began the first round in the Southern Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. The Terriers opened up play against Appalachian State on Chattanooga’s Champions Club courts. After winning the early doubles point the Terriers put themselves in a good position to bring home the win, but the Mountaineers displayed strong singles play to win 4-3 and advance to the second round.
Coach Hangstefer’s team concludes the season with an overall 10-15 record and a 2-8 record in Southern Conference play. Appalachian State improves to an 11-10 record with the victory. The Mountaineers will advance to the second round and play the No. 1 seed, College of Charleston, tomorrow starting at 8:30 a.m.
The Wofford women’s tennis squad earned the first point after winning the doubles point. Senior duo, Haley Baird and Emilia “Frenchie” Milovanovic finished what would be their final doubles match as Terriers and went out with a bang, winning 8-3 against ASU’s Blakely Bean and Ellie Linsell. The senior pair closes the season with a 5-6 record in doubles.
Freshmen duo, Lucy Schermerhorn and Samantha Sullivan secured the doubles point with an 8-6 win against ASU’s Jessica Thaggard and Amanda Cash. With the doubles point already decided, the No. 2 match-up featuring Wofford’s Sarah Evans and Julia Paulson against Jennifer Ansari and Gisela Fernandez was called. Evans and Paulson conclude the season tied for first with the most doubles wins at eight.
Appalachian State drew the match even after winning the first singles contest on court six. Wofford’s Meagan Laframboise lost 6-1, 6-1 to ASU’s Kim-Lea Dinh. Paulson put the Terriers back in the lead with a straight sets win at No. 4. Paulson only gave up two games in her match, beating ASU’s Bean 6-2, 6-0. The Mountaineers again tied up the match with a win at No. 5. Schermerhorn dropped her match to ASU’s Amanda Cash, 6-2, 6-1.
Despite a strong performance from Milovanovic, the senior lost 6-4, 6-4 at the top spot against Linsell. Milovanovic played in the final singles match of her collegiate career and finished the season with eleven singles wins. Milovanovic played all but one of her singles matches at the No. 1 slot.
Evans finished next after winning her match at the No. 3 position in three sets. Evans lost the first set 6-3, but composed herself and finished strong, only giving up five games in the final two sets and won 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. The freshman turned out to be one of the most dominating singles players on the team after tallying a team-high 16 total singles wins throughout the year. Evans split time at No. 2 and 3 throughout the season and finished 8-4 at each spot.
With the game tied at 3-3, the finish came down to team captain Haley Baird. Baird was facing ASU’s Jennifer Ansari at the No. 2 spot. Baird lost the first set, 6-4, but came back and controlled the second set, 6-1. The match was forced to a third set and the senior fell just short, losing 6-4. Baird concluded the season with 11 singles wins.
