Spartanburg, S.C. – The Wofford women’s tennis team played their second match of the weekend at Reeves Tennis Center, facing the UNCG Spartans on a bright and clear Sunday afternoon. The Terriers fought hard to knock UNCG off the top spot in the conference, but lost the match to the Spartans, 4-3.
In a match that in the end was decided by the early doubles point, the doubles action was sensational at the No. 1 and No. 3 slots. The senior duo, Haley Baird and Emilia Milovanovic, started at the No. 1 spot and came out on fire, going 4-1 in the first five games. The pair split the next two games against UNCG’s Stephanie MacFarlane and Alex Whitehead, pushing the score to 5-2. MacFarlane and Whitehead stirred a comeback, winning six straight to capture an 8-5 win.
Lucy Schermerhorn and Samantha Sullivan started at the No. 3 position and held their largest lead at 4-2 against UNCG’s Mikayla Rogers and Devon Sutherland. The UNCG pair held on in the end, winning the doubles match, 8-6.
With the doubles point, UNCG took the lead at 1-0 and extended their lead to 3-0 after knocking off Wofford’s Schermerhorn and Meagan Laframboise in singles at No. 5 and 6.
The Spartans would grab one other singles win at No. 1 to give them the overall win. Wofford’s Emilia Milovanovic played UNCG’s Niltooli Wilkins and lost 7-5, 6-2.
Wofford’s three wins in singles came from the No. 1, 3 and 4 positions. Freshman Sarah Evans only gave up two games on the afternoon to UNCG’s MacFarlane at the No. 3. Evans beat MacFarlane 6-1, 6-1. Evans tallies an unprecedented 14-6 record in her rookie season, and records a 5-2 standing in Southern Conference singles play.
Freshman Julia Paulson is right behind Evans in singles wins, improving her record to 13-7 with a win against UNCG’s Dilara Yurtkuran. Paulson started at the No. 4 spot and knocked off Yurtkuran in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Senior captain, Haley Baird, was last to finish in singles play. With the match result already determined, Baird went on to beat Alex Whitehead in three sets. Baird never looked back after losing the first set, beating Whitehead 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 2 slot.
The Terriers will go on the road for the next two conference matches. They will face Appalachian State April 8th at 3:00 p.m. and Davidson on April 12th at 3:00 p.m.
