BOONE, N.C. – The Wofford women’s tennis team traveled to Appalachian State Friday afternoon to face the Mountaineers at the ASU Tennis Courts. Wofford began with a stellar start in doubles, winning the point, but Appalachian State swept the singles competition to grab a 6-1 victory over the Terriers.
Wofford drops to a 10-12 record on the season, with a 2-6 Southern Conference standing. Appalachian grabs a 10-8 overall record and improves to 3-5 in the SoCon.
The Terriers came out on fire to earn the early doubles point. Coach Hangstefer’s squad only gave up three games total at the No. 1 and 3 doubles slots. At No. 1, Wofford’s Emilia Milovanovic and Haley Baird routed ASU’s Ellie Linsell and Blakeley Bean 8-1. Wofford’s Lucy Schermerhorn and Samantha Sullivan nearly mirrored the same result, beating ASU’s Jessica Thaggard and Amanda Cash 8-2.
Despite the strong play in doubles, Appalachian State went on the control the remainder of the match and win every singles match. This marks the first time on the season the Terriers have lost a match after winning the doubles point.
Wofford’s Sarah Evans recorded the strongest battle, after forcing her match at No. 3 to a super tie-breaker. Evans beat Thaggard 6-4 in the second set after losing the first set 6-2, but Thaggard came out on top in the tie-breaker 10-1.
The Terriers will go back on the road for their final away match of the season against Davidson, April 12th. The match is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
