Terriers Finish SIUE Tournament 3-1 After Splitting Two Matches Saturday

EDWARDSVILLE, ILL.  -- Wofford College women’s volleyball team finished the Southern Illinois Edwardsville Tournament with a 3-1 record after defeating host SIUE 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-22, 26-24) in the first match on day two and falling to Western Illinois 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-21) in the second match Saturday in their season opening tournament.

In the first set of game one, the Terriers fell behind 8-4 before rallying to tie the match at ten highlighted by three Amanda Liguori kills and a service ace.  Down 13-11, Wofford road Reagan Styles serve to a 14-17 lead.  Wendy Burnett had two kills and a block assists during the run.  SIUE clawed back within one three times but the Terriers held on for the 25-23, as Liguori had three kills during the final six points.  Liguori finished the set with six kills on 12 attempts with one error.

In set two, the Cougars pushed a 13-13 tie to a 16-14 lead and never relented.  Wofford was able to tie the match at 17 on a Ligouri service ace, but SIUE closed out the set to tie the match at one with an 8-3 run.  Rachel Woodlee had four kills in the set.

Wofford came out in set three and jumped out to 15-7 lead.  With the score 19-12, SIUE mounted a comeback cutting the lead to 20-19, but Wofford held on to win the set receiving kills from Liguori, Burnett and Woodlee to win the set 25-22.  

Up 2-1, The two teams went back and fourth in the final set.  Wofford turned a 13-10 deficit into a 15-13 lead on two Arden Anderson kills and a block from Taylor Baird and Anderson.  The Terriers extended their lead to 20-16 only to see the Cougars erase the margin and tie the match at 22.  SIUE scored the next point only to see Wofford take a 24-23 lead on kills from Dorsey and Anderson.  A Terrier service error tied the match at 24, but Anderson gave the Terriers a one point lead on a kill, and Woodlee sealed the 26-24 win with a kill.

The Terriers outhit the Cougars .240 to .210.

Liguori led the Terriers with 16 points on 12 kills and three service aces.  She also recorded a double-double as she picked up 14 digs.  Woodlee also had a double-double with 11 kills and a team-high 17 digs.  Dorsey notched a double-double with 38 assists and 11 digs.  Baird finished with 7 kills, six of which came in the final two sets.  She also notched a team-high two and a half total blocks.

In match two of the day against Western Illinois, the Leathernecks took off to a 10-2 lead in the first set and led wire-to-wire.  The Terriers were never able to pull within five points as they fell 25-19.

Set two started with the Terriers takeing a 10-6 lead.  Western Illinois pulled within two points, 12-10, but Wofford would push the lead back to 17-11 as Liguori and Baird each notched a kill.  With the score 19-13, Terriers, the Leathernecks mounted an 11-5 run to tie the match at 21.  The two teams would trade points until the Leathernecks flipped a 24-23 deficit into a 26-24 win with three consecutive kills to take the set 26-24.

In the third and final set, the two teams swapped the lead until the Leathernecks broke a 10-10 tie with a 6-2 run to take a 16-12 lead.  Wofford was never able to close the gap and retake the lead as they fell 25-21 in set three to end the match.

Wofford was led offensively by Anderson who had nine kills.  She also paced the team with 12 points and three total blocks.  Liguori tallied eight kills while Burnett and Baird had six kills.  Dorsey passed out 28 assists and recorded 12 digs for her third double-double of the tournament.  

For the first time in the tournament the Terriers were outhit .186 to .168.   

The Terriers will return to action August 30th against Charleston Southern down in Charleston, S.C.
