Box Score Box Score: #4 North Carolina 1, Wofford 0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s soccer team fell to #4 North Carolina by a 1-0 score Tuesday evening in the squad’s home opener at Snyder Field. The Terriers fall to 2-4-1 overall, while the Tar Heels improve to 6-1-0 on the season.

The first half was a defensive struggle between the two squads, as neither team were able to put a shot on goal during the opening 45 minutes of action. The Terriers were able to attempt two shots in the half, with one by Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez late in the half bouncing off the right goal post.

The Tar Heels were able to score the evening’s lone goal in the 56th minute of play, when Enzo Martinez put a shot past Wofford goalkeeper Andrew Drennan into the left side of the goal following a pass by Billy Schuler into the middle of the box.

Wofford nearly scored the tying goal in the 78th minute of play following a throw in, but the ball made its way past UNC goalkeeper Scott Goodwin after a hand ball by Dennis Moore, who received a yellow card as a result.

In the 81st minute, Dominguez Gonzalez headed the ball toward the left side of the goal, with the ball passing the outstretched hands of Goodwin, but it sailed just wide, in what proved to be the final chance that the Terriers had to score the game-tying goal.

Drennan took the loss for Wofford, earning four saves while facing a total of 15 shots. Goodwin was awarded the win, facing four shots throughout the evening.

The Terriers will next be in action Saturday afternoon, hosting College of Charleston to open Southern Conference play. The match is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start time at Snyder Field.
