RESULTS: Winthrop 7, Wofford 0
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the first match of the 2012 season, the Wofford women’s tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Winthrop at the Reeves Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
Action began with doubles play, where Terrier duo of Julia Paulson and Samantha Sullivan defeated Winthrop’s Giovanna Portiolli and Camille Amrani (8-4) at the No. 3 position, yet the Eagles took the two remaining matches to claim the doubles point.
In singles action, Sarah Evans claimed the first set in her match against Yasmine Alhema at the No. 1 spot, but Alhema took the following set and the tiebreaker to earn the win (1-6, 6-3, 10-3). The matches at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions went into extended third-set tiebreakers as well. Emily Pryzstawski took the first set from Ekin Gunaysu in a tiebreaker, but Gunaysu won the following set as well as the tiebreaker for the win at the No. 4 spot (6-7(3), 6-2, 10-5). At the No. 3 spot, Audrey Coventry dropped the first set to Giovanna Portiolli, yet she fought back to claim the second set to send the match to third-set tiebreaker. The two played a marathon tiebreaker, yet Portiolli was able to earn the win (6-4, 5-7, 12-10).
The Eagles took the remaining three singles matches in straight sets to seal the 7-0 win.
The Terriers will next be in action on Saturday, January 28
th as they hit the road to face North Carolina A&T. The match is set for a start time of 1:00 p.m. in Greensboro, N.C.
