SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s soccer team fell to Georgia Southern in an extremely physical contest 1-0 Saturday night at Snyder Field. A solo second half goal proved the difference as Wofford drops to 9-6-0 and 2-2-0 in the SoCon, while Georgia Southern improves to 4-10-1 and 2-2-1 in conference play.
The game was very rough from the start as a total of 23 fouls were called and six yellow cards were shown. In the first half Wofford nearly found the back of the net in the 12
th minute when Alex Hutchins sent a shot towards goal but Georgia Southern goalkeeper Neal Bates was there for the save. The Terriers would threaten again 30 seconds later but Connor Davis’ header went just high. Wofford’s best chance came in the 28
th minute when Forrest Lasso’s header off a throw in went just wide of the far post. At the break, Wofford held the edge in shots (7-6), Georgia Southern took more corners (3-1), but the difference was Bates whose five first half saves were enough to keep the score tied 0-0.
The Terriers continued to test the Eagles’ defense in the second half and Lasso nearly gave Wofford the lead in the 53
rd minute. Nestor Jaramillo sent in a corner that found Lasso at the back post but an Eagle defender was able to clear the ball off the goal line. Despite Wofford controlling the second half, Georgia Southern would score to take the lead in the 67
th minute. Joe Hughes was able to possess the ball and fire a shot from outside the 18 yard box past Terrier goalie Andrew Drennan, and into the top right corner of the net. Wofford pressed hard to score an equalizer in the final 20 minutes but Bates was up the task as he recorded four second half saves. Overall, Wofford held the edge in shots (19-9) and corners taken (7-3) but it was not enough as the Eagles escaped with the 1-0 victory.
Andrew Drennan got the loss for Wofford and falls to 9-6-0 this season. He made one save on nine shots. Neal Bates had the win for Georgia Southern as he made nine saves on 19 shots.
Wofford returns to the field on Tuesday, October 23 when they host the Mountaineers of Appalachian State in a Southern Conference showdown. The match is set to kick-off at 7:00 p.m.
