STATESBORO, Ga. – The Wofford women’s soccer team comes up short in a comeback effort against Georgia Southern, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in their final road game of the season.  The Terriers fall to 6-9-2 and 1-7-2 in the SoCon, while Georgia Southern improves to 7-7-4 and 3-6-1 in conference play.

Georgia Southern opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Courtney Collins assisted on Nora El-Shami’s fourth goal of the season.  Collins was able to find El-Shami with a pass, and she was able to score past Wofford keeper Kimberly Cohn from 23 yards out.  Despite the early goal, Wofford was still able to threaten late in the first half but Georgia Southern goalie Katie Merson was there to make the saves.  At the break, Wofford held the edge in shots (6-3) but the Eagles led 1-0.

The Eagles doubled their lead early in the second half when Stephanie Gratto scored after winning the ball from a Terrier defender at the edge of the 18 yard box.  Wofford continued to attack, forcing Merson to make three more saves before the Terriers were finally able to break through in the 78th minute.  Annika Jansson assisted on Mary Beth Bleekrode’s third career goal.  Kara Boggs replaced Kimberly Cohn in goal for the Terriers in the 78th minute.  Wofford made one last ditch effort to score the equalizing goal in the 90th minute but Merson was able to make the save on Maureen Buff’s shot.  The game would end 2-1 in favor of Georgia Southern despite Wofford taking more shots and more shots on goal.

Kimberly Cohn gets the loss for Wofford and falls to 0-5-2 this season.  She made four saves on 11 shots faced in 78 minutes of play.  Kara Boggs did not see a shot in 12 minutes of action.  Katie Merson gets the win for Georgia Southern as she made seven saves on 12 shots.
