SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A late second half goal proved the difference as the Wofford men’s soccer team fell to Appalachian State 2-1 Tuesday night at Snyder Field.  The Terriers fall to 9-7-0 and 2-3-0 in conference play while the Mountaineers got their first conference win and improved to 6-7-3 and 1-3-2 in the SoCon.

Wofford nearly took the lead in the 4th minute off a long throw-in but Connor Davis’ header sailed just over the crossbar.  The Terriers threatened again off a corner in the 24th minute but Mountaineer keeper Danny Free was able to save Forrest Lasso’s headed chance.  Appalachian State found the back of Wofford’s net in the 26th minute off a free kick when Luke Adams assisted on Lee Williams’ goal.  Adams sent the ball towards the far post where Williams was able to poke the ball past onrushing Wofford goalkeeper Andrew Drennan.  The Mountaineers nearly doubled their lead in the 33rd minute but Alex Herbst’s attempt was headed off the goal line by Lasso.  It appeared that the half would end 1-0 in favor of Appalachian State, but Wofford would final capitalize off a free kick with just 20 seconds left in the period.  Nestor Jaramillo sent the free kick into the box where it was flicked by Lasso to Alex Hutchins at the far post.  Hutchins took one touch towards the middle of the field then fired a low shot into the bottom left corner past Free to tie the game 1-1.  At the break, each team had taken four shots, but Wofford held the edge in corners (4-3).

In the second half, neither team took a shot until the 70th minute when Appalachian State would retake the lead on Kristian Lee-Him’s second goal of the season.  Alex Herbst took the ball wide to Drennan’s right then sent a low cross through the box that found Lee-Him, who was able to score down the middle before Drennan could react.  Wofford pressed hard to score an equalizer in the final 20 minutes and the Terriers best chance came in the 82nd minute.  Billy Padula sent a long throw-in into the box that Lasso was able to head towards the far post.  The ball was going in but Free made an excellent diving save to protect the lead.  Wofford would not get another chance and the game would end 2-1 in favor of the Mountaineers.  Overall, Appalachian State held the edge in shots (7-6) and each team took four corners.

Andrew Drennan gets the loss for Wofford and drops to 9-7-0 this season.  He made one save on seven shots.  Danny Free gets the win for Appalachian State and improves to 4-6-2 for the year.  He recorded three saves on six shots faced.

Wofford returns to action October 27 to host the Furman Paladins in the team’s home finale.  Before the game the men’s soccer team will honor all seniors.  The match is set to kick-off at 7:00 p.m.
