SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Two second half goals were not enough as the Wofford women’s soccer team fell to Furman 3-2 in double-overtime in the 2012 season finale. The Terriers finished the season 6-10-2 and 1-8-2 in conference play, while the Paladins end the year with a mark of 13-3-2 and 7-2-2 in the SoCon.
Furman took an early lead in the 7
th minute when Caitlin Shelton assisted on Martha Hall’s third goal of the season. Shelton found Hall, who was able to slot the ball into the bottom left corner past Wofford keeper Erika Christensen. Each team would make a change in goal; first Maggie Grisell replaced Rose Hull for Furman in the 24
th minute, then Kimberly Cohn entered for Wofford in the 28
th minute. The Paladins would extend their lead to 2-0 when Jamie Alexander scored in the 38
th minute. Shelton passed to Alyssa Althoff, who headed the ball into the path of Alexander who was able to score past Terrier goalie Kimberly Cohn. The teams did not threaten again and they would head to the locker room with Furman leading 2-0. In the first half the Paladins held the edge in shots (11-0) and each team took one corner kick.
Wofford started the second half with a furry as they attacked to try and even the score. The Terriers would cut the lead to 2-1 in the 54
th minute when Maggie Bosley scored her third goal of the year. Alex Kachulis sent a free kick under the wall that deflected to Bosley who was able to score past Furman’s Grisell with a shot to the far post. Wofford would tie the game just four minutes later when Kachulis scored her second goal of the season. The Terriers sent a ball into the box that was poorly cleared by a Furman defender and Kachulis was able to fire a quick shot over the Grisell’s head and under the cross bar from 25 yards out. Wofford nearly took the lead a few minutes later when the ball was deflected around the Furman box but no Terriers were able to get a shot towards goal. The Paladins pressed hard in the final 30 minutes as they fought to score the game winner, but Wofford’s Kimberly Cohn was too strong as she made seven second half saves to keep the game tied 2-2.
Heading into overtime, Furman had outshot Wofford (21-5) but it was not enough to separate the two teams. In the first overtime, Furman took three shots but none threatened Cohn as the ten minutes ended with the teams still tied 2-2. However, Furman would finally break through just two minutes into the second overtime. Alexander was able to get past a Wofford defender, turn, and fire a quick shot into the top left corner to win the game 3-2 for Furman.
Kimberly Cohn gets the loss for Wofford and falls to 0-6-2. She allowed one goal, recorded a season high nine saves on 18 shots. Erika Christensen also allowed one goal, and made three saves on 7 seven shots in 28 minutes of action. Maggie Grisell earned the win for Furman and improves to 2-1-0. She allowed both Terrier goals and made two saves on five shots in 78 minutes.
Prior to kick-off, the 2012 senior class was honored in a ceremony on the field with their parents. Chelsea Ashworth, Erika Christensen, Jewel Kawamoto, Amanda Morris, and Erin Stephenson were recognized for their contributions to the women’s soccer program during their time at Wofford.
