GREENVILLE, S.C. – Led by career-high in kills from Amanda Liguori and Arden Anderson the Wofford volleyball team took a fifth set thriller from Furman, 3-2 (21-25, 28-26, 25-15, 22-25, 18-16) Friday night to give the Terriers their first win over the Paladins since the 2005 season, 13-matches.
Wofford improves to 14-10 overall and 4-7 in Southern Conference action, while Furman slips to 19-7 on the year and 7-4 in the conference. The win ends a seven-year drought to the Paladins and a 13-match streak. It is the second time Wofford has ended a 13-match losing streak to an opponent this season as they defeated Appalachian State on October 12.
Liguori paced Wofford with a career-high 21 kills and 22.5 total pints as she added an ace and one block assists. Anderson’s 19 kills and set a new career-high. She also hit a match-high .457 clip and her 20.5 total points, 19 kills and three block assists, set a new career-high. Rachel Woodlee added 12 kills and a .312 hitting percentage. Bekah Dorsey shattered her previous career-high with 61 assists in the match. She also picked up 11 digs to earn her team leading tenth double-double of the season. Reagan Styles collected a match-high 25 digs for the Terriers on defense, while Jessica Graham and Kelsey Bagwell earned 15 and 13 digs respectively.
Wofford held the early advantage in the opening set, 10-8, but Furman notched back-to-back points to tie the set at ten. The Terriers again took a two-point lead, 15-13, only to have the Paladins retie the set at 15. With the set tied at 16, Furman took its firsts lead of the set, 18-16, following a Paladin kill and a Terrier attack error. The Paladins mounted a 5-2 run to take a 23-18 lead as they went on to claim the first set 25-21.
In the second set, Wofford took a 5-2 lead and held a 9-7 lead before Furman pulled even at nine. The Paladins broke a tie at ten with a 4-1 run to take a 14-11 lead. The Paladins pushed the lead out to five points, 17-12, but Wofford fought back and trimmed the lead to 17-14. Furman kept the lead between three and four points, until Wofford rallied off four straight points to tie the set at 24. Trailing 26-25 and facing their second set point and a 2-0 deficit in the match, the Terriers scored the next three points on a Paladin service error, a Styles ace and a Liguori kill to win the second set 28-26.
Wofford broke a tie at five in the third set with a kill from Woodlee and Anderson to give the Terriers a 7-5 lead. Wofford held the small lead until Furman tied the set at 13 on a kill from Chandler Ambrester, but the Terriers retook a two point lead following a Paladin ball handling error and a Woodlee kill to give Wofford a 15-13 lead. After a kill by Ambrester cut the margin back to one point, 15-14, Wofford closed out the set, 25-15, with a 10-1 run to earn the 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set saw Furman take a 13-8 and had the Paladins hold the five-point lead until the Terriers pulled within a point, 15-14. Furman answered by pushing the lead out to four points, 18-14, but Wofford again responded with a 5-0 run to take a 19-18 lead. Neither team could pull away as they traded the next seven points. Furman broke a tie at 22 with the final three points on a kill from Christina Dorismond, a block by Dorismond and Jo Wilks and a Terrier attack error to earn the 25-22 set win and force a fifth set.
Wofford took an early 5-1 lead in the fifth set, but Furman pulled within two-points, 5-3 on two Terrier errors. Wofford held the two-point lead until a kill from Rachel Woodlee pushed the lead to three points, 10-7. The lead waivered between two and three points, the Paladins turned a 12-9 deficit into a 13-12 lead with a 4-0 run. The two teams traded points as Furman fought off match point at 15-14 with a kill by Ambrester. The Paladins held off another set point at 16-15, on a kill by Christina Curry to level the set at 16 and force a Terrier timeout. Coming out of the timeout Wofford took a 17-16 off a Paladin error and claimed the set, 18-16, and the match on another Paladin error.
Wofford held a slight advantage in hitting percentage with a .278 clip, while Furman hit .223. Wofford had one more kill than Furman, 70-69, but the Paladins held a small edge at the net with eight team blocks compared to seven and a half for Wofford.
Furman was led by Ambrester, who recorded 23 kills and 20 digs to earn a double-double. She was also responsible for 24.5 points. Dorismond added 16 kills, and Caroline Adams notched 13 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Jo Wilks handed out a match-high 62 assists, while Katie Harrell picked up 20 digs for the Paladins.
Wofford returns to the court Sunday at 2 p.m. when Samford visits the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
