SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s soccer team fought the College of Charleston to a 0-0 draw in double-overtime Tuesday night in the Terrier’s regular season finale. After the tie, Wofford improves to 9-8-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the SoCon, while Charleston improves to 8-9-1 and 4-2-1 in conference play.
In the first half both teams saw lots of the ball but neither goalie was tested until the 36
th minute. Nestor Jaramillo sent a shot on frame that was saved by Cougar goalkeeper Kees Heemskerk. Wofford would threaten again in the 43
rd minute but Heemskerk was there to make the save on Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez’s attempt. The teams would head to the locker room tied 0-0. Charleston held the edge in shots (6-4) and each team had taken two corners.
Wofford would again test Heemskerk in the first six minutes of the second half. First Jaramillo would force another save by the Cougar keeper. Then on the ensuing corner, Heemskerk would save a shot by Connor Davis. In the 51
st minute Ryan Hurst would try his luck against Heemskerk but the keeper would get the better of him making his third save of the second half. The Cougars would test Terrier goalie Andrew Drennan in the 77
th minute but he was be able to save Luke Huggett’s shot. Both teams pressed for a late winner but the defenses were too strong and regulation ended in a 0-0 tie.
As the teams prepared for overtime, Charleston held a slight edge in shots (17-16) and corners taken (8-6). In the first period of extra time, Charleston dominated play taking the only shots (5) and corners (2) of the period. Two of their attempts were on target but Drennan was there to save both. After 100 minutes there was still nothing to separate the two teams and they headed to a second overtime. In the final ten minutes of the regular season, both teams were unable to create a scoring chance and the game would end in a scoreless draw.
Andrew Drennan earned his fifth shutout and improves to 9-8-1 this season. He recorded three saves on 24 shots faced. Kees Heemskerk also earned his fifth shutout and ends the season with an 8-9-1 record. He made five saves on 17 shots.
The Terriers return to action Saturday, November 3 for the first round of the Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Championship. They will travel to Greenville, S.C. to face the Paladins of Furman for the second time in a week. The match is set to kick-off at 6:00 p.m.
