SPARTANBURG, S.C. – An early goal proved too much as the Wofford women’s soccer team fell to the Spartans of UNCG Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference action. Wofford drops to 6-6-1 and 1-4-1 in conference, while UNCG improves to 7-6-1 and 4-1-1 in the SoCon.
UNCG opened the scoring in the 11
th minute when Katie Durst sent a cross into the box that was tipped by Wofford keeper Kimberly Cohn. The ball deflected off the left post and fell in front of goal, where Lauren Hein was able to fire it into the top netting before Cohn could recover. Neither team would be able to create another quality scoring chance until the 41
st minute. Wofford forward Chloe Brackett found herself one-on-one with Spartan goalie, Jamie Simmons. However, she was unable to make solid contact and shot the ball directly at Simmons, who was able to make the save. The half wound end with UNCG leading 1-0. Each team took two shots, and UNCG took the only corner of the half.
Wofford dominated play in the early stages of the second half as they created several good scoring chances but were unable to beat Simmons. Wofford’s best chance came in the 57
th minute when the Terriers earned a free kick after a Spartan foul. Jewel Kawamoto took the shot for Wofford but it sailed just high as it landed on top of the goal netting. The Terriers would outshoot the Spartans (6-1) and take the only corner of the half but could not beat the Spartan defense and Simmons.
Kimberly Cohn gets the loss for Wofford and drops to 0-2-1. She did not record a save on three shots. Jamie Simmons earned the shutout win for UNCG and improves 7-5-1 this season. She recorded three saves on eight shots faced.
Wofford returns to action on October 12, when they host Appalachian State. The match is set to kick-off at 6:00 p.m. at Snyder Field.
