ELON, N.C. –Carlos Dominguez Gonzale’s hat trick and Nestor Jaramillo’s overtime winner led the Wofford men’s soccer team to a 4-3 victory over #20 Elon Tuesday night. Wofford improves to 8-4-0 and 2-0-0 in SoCon play, and Elon drops to 8-3-1 and 2-1-0 in the conference.
Wofford opened the scoring in the 27
th minute when Alex Hutchins assisted on Dominguez Gonzalez’s first goal of the season to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead. However, the lead would not last long because Elon would equalize in the 34
th minute. Nick Butterly was able to beat Terrier keeper, Andrew Drennan, with a header off James Brace’s corner kick. Wofford held the edge in shots (8-4) and each team took three corners, but the half would end with the teams tied 1-1.
In the second half, Elon would take the lead after just nine minutes of play. James Brace fired a shot at Drennan, who was able to make the initial save but Matt Wescoe was there to score off the rebound to give Elon a 2-1 lead. Dominguez Gonzalez would find the back of the net for his second goal of the game in 68
th minute to tie the score at two. He was able to head the ball past Elon goalie, Nathan Dean, off a long throw in by Billy Padula that was flicked on by Connor Davis. Dominquez Gonzalez would record a hat trick in the 80
th minute, when Blair Gaines assisted on his third goal to give the Terriers a 3-2 lead with ten minutes left to play. The lead would be short lived, after Samuel McBride assisted Matt Wescoe second goal to tie the score at three. Regulation would end and the teams would head to overtime tied 3-3.
The game would end in the 95
th minute when Dominguez Gonzalez assisted on Jaramillo’s game-winning goal. Jaramillo controlled the ball outside the 18 yard box on the goalie’s left. Then, he was able to fire a curving shot past the keeper, off the inside of the far post, and in to win the game for the Terriers.
Andrew Drennan earned the victory for Wofford and improves to 8-4-0 this season. He made three saves on 15 shots. Nathan Dean gets the loss for Elon and falls to 8-3-1 for the year. He recorded four saves on 13 shots faced.
The Terriers return to the pitch on October 13 when they host the Davidson Wildcats in their SoCon home opener. The match is set to kick-off at 7:00 p.m. at Snyder Field.
