CHARLESTON, S.C. – In the first game of a weekend series, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 5-1 by the College of Charleston at Patriots Point. Pitching for both teams was outstanding, as only twelve hits were allowed in the game with a total of 19 strikeouts recorded.
Wofford is 8-10 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The College of Charleston is 13-5 overall with a 5-2 mark in the SoCon. The Terriers were led by James Foster with two doubles and Josh Hyman with an RBI single. The Cougars had two hits each from Bradley Goodson, Marty Gantt, and Cody Martin,
The Terriers opened the game with a double by James Foster and a single by Josh Hyman scored drove in the run for an early 1-0 lead. The Cougars answered with doubles by Bradley Goodson and Marty Gantt to tie the game at one. An RBI single by Rob Harding gave the College of Charleston a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first inning.
In the bottom of the second, the Cougars added a run on a single by Bradley Goodson up the middle for a 3-1 lead. After eleven Terriers were retired in a row, Eric Brenk opened the top of the fifth with a single but Wofford could not cut into the lead.
Wofford added a double in the top of the sixth by James Foster, but he was left on base. The Cougars had two runners reach base in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs when a single up the middle by Cody Martin scored both players for a 5-1 lead.
Wofford starter Brandon Yarusi (2-1) went a season-high 7.2 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts. J.D. Osborne allowed one hit in a third of an inning. The Terriers did not have an error for only the second game this season.
College of Charleston starter Josh Renfro (3-1) threw a complete game and allowed only one run on four hits in nine innings. He struck out eleven without allowing a walk.
The three-game series with the College of Charleston continues on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and concludes on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. On Wednesday night, the Terriers will play two-time defending National Champion South Carolina in Columbia.
