CHARLESTON, S.C. – On Sunday afternoon, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 8-7 in ten innings by The Citadel at Riley Park. The Terriers score the first five runs of the game, but the Bulldogs scored six runs in the final three innings to send the game to extra innings tied at seven. Three straight singles with two outs in the bottom of the tenth won the game and the series for the Bulldogs.
Wofford is 11-17 overall and 1-8 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 11-16 overall and 3-6 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Eric Brenk and Matt Moore with three hits each, while James Foster had three RBIs on two hits. Wofford pitcher Cash Collins opened the game without allowing a hit in 5.1 innings. The Bulldogs had three hits and three RBIs by Nick Orvin, with all three hits coming in the final four innings.
The Terriers opened the scoring with a solo home run to right center by Mac Doyle in the top of the first inning. It was his seventh home run of the season and 41st of his career, tied for fifth in school history.
After the Bulldogs left one on base in the bottom of the first, Eric Brenk led off the second with a single. Wofford loaded the bases on a fielder’s choice and a walk, setting up a two-run single by James Foster to take a 3-0 lead.
Following a scoreless third inning, Eric Brenk opened the fourth inning with a double to left center. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and then Josh Hyman reached on an error that scored Brenk for a 4-0 advantage. Hyman stole third and scored on a double down the left line by Matt Moore.
In the sixth inning, Eric Brenk had his third hit of the day and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Josh Hyman was hit by a pitch and a single by Matt Moore loaded the bases with one out, but all three runners were stranded. The Citadel had their first hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Mason Davis. A single up the middle by Justin Mackert drove in a run for the Bulldogs to make it 5-1 after six innings.
The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the seventh. The Bulldogs had two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh when Nick Orvin hit a double to right field that scored both to cut the lead to 5-3.
In the top of the eighth, Wofford had two runners on base when an infield single by Matthew Kaskow drove in a run. James Foster added an RBI single to push the lead to 7-3. The Bulldogs opened the bottom of the eighth with a walk and a hit by pitch. A ground out by Grant Richards added a run for a 7-4 score.
Wofford had two runners on base in the top of the ninth when Eric Brenk reached on an error and David Roney singled, but both were left on base. The Citadel opened the bottom of the ninth with a walk and a double down the left line by Nick Orvin drove in a run to make it a 7-5 game. Justin Mackert added a single to put runners on the corners with two outs. A single through the right side by Calvin Orth drove in both runners to tie the game at seven. Joe Jackson added a single, but two runners were left on base to end the ninth tied.
Heading to the top of the tenth, the Terriers hit into a double play. The Citadel had singles from Bailey Rush and Nick Orvin in the bottom of the tenth. A two-out single to right center by Mason Davis drove in Rush to take an 8-7 win.
Wofford starter Cash Collins threw 6.2 innings and allowed three hits and three runs, only one of which was earned, along with two strikeouts. Pete Noordsy worked 1.1 innings and gave up one run without a hit and had one strikeout. Eric Eck threw two-thirds of an inning and allowed three runs on three hits with one strikeout. J.D. Osborne gave up one hit and Alex Wilson (1-3) worked one inning and allowed one run on three hits.
The Citadel starter Logan Cribb went 3.1 innings and gave up five runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Brett Tompkins threw 2.1 innings with two hits allowed. Ross White went 1.2 innings with one unearned run allowed but no hits. Zach Sherrill worked a third of an inning and gave up three hits and one run. Ryan Hines (2-1) threw 1.1 innings with one hit allowed.
Next week the Terriers will play Tuesday and Wednesday at Virginia Tech before hosting Western Carolina for one game Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday.
