DAVIDSON, N.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 2-1 by Davidson at Wilson Field. For the second straight contest, pitching was the story of the game as the starters allowed only one earned run and had 20 strikeouts between them.
Wofford is 14-21 overall and 3-11 in the Southern Conference. Davidson is 13-19 overall and 5-12 in conference play. The Terriers had five different players with hits in the game, including Josh Hyman with a double. The Wildcats were led by Ryan Lowe with two hits, including a double.
The Wildcats left one on base in the bottom of the first and Wofford left one on base in the top of the second. Davidson had two singles in the bottom of the second, but two runners were stranded. The Terriers had their first hit of the day in the top of the third by Matthew Kaskow, which was followed by a single by James Foster. Both runners were left on base.
In the top of the fourth, David Roney walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. A double down the left line by Josh Hyman scored Roney for a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, the Wildcats had two runners on after a walk and single, then a double steal moved them into scoring position. Forrest Brandt reached on an error, which allowed the two runners to score for a 2-1 advantage.
Both teams were retired in order in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, the Wildcats led off with a double and ended up stranding two runners. The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the eighth, which included a great catch by the centerfielder at the fence. Davidson had two runners on base in the bottom of the eighth, but both were left on base.
The Terriers led off the ninth with a single by Eric Brenk. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but a pop up ended the game.
Wofford starter Jesse Morris (2-3) went 6.2 innings and allowed two unearned runs on four hits with a career high nine strikeouts. Alex Wilson worked an inning and gave up one hit with one strikeout. J.D. Osborne struck out the one batter he faced.
Davidson starter Ryan Overcash (3-5) threw a complete game and gave up only one run on five hits with eleven strikeouts.
Wofford will conclude the series at Davidson on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. On Wednesday night, the Terriers will play at USC Upstate.
