SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against Georgia Southern on Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers won the first game 8-5 after scoring seven runs in the eighth inning and took game two by a score of 3-1 after a two-run walk-off homer by James Foster.
Wofford is 22-32 overall and 9-21 in the SoCon. Georgia Southern is 30-26 overall and 15-15 in league play. The Terriers won the weekend series against the Eagles for the second straight season. Wofford finishes the season in tenth place in the SoCon standings, having won nine games for the third straight season.
In game one, Georgia Southern had singles in the first and second inning. The Terriers loaded the bases in the bottom of the third after a triple by James Foster and walks to Mac Doyle and Konstantine Diamaduros, but all three were stranded. The Eagles added a hit in the top of the fifth inning.
Georgia Southern got on the board in the top of the sixth inning when a failed pickoff attempt allowed Scooter Williams to score. Three doubles in a row by Eric Phillips, Chase Griffin, and T.D. Davis plated two runs to make it a 3-0 lead. A single by Tyler Avera drove in a run for a 4-0 advantage.
The Terriers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh on three straight singles by Luke Feisal, Eric Brenk, and Stephen Cantrell. A sacrifice fly by James Foster drove in Feisal for a 4-1 score.
After the Eagles were retired in order in the top of the eighth, the Terriers had a single from Konstantine Diamaduros in the bottom of the inning. Josh Hyman singled on a hit-and-run, moving Diamaduros to third. A double steal made it a 4-2 game as the throw went to second base. Luke Fiesal walked and another double steal gave the Terriers two runners in scoring position with two outs.
A single up the middle by Eric Brenk scored both to tie the game at four. Stephen Cantrell walked and a passed ball moved the runners to second and third. James Foster had a single up the middle that scored both runners to take a 6-4 lead. An RBI single by Mac Doyle scored a run, then a wild pitch allowed a run to score for an 8-4 lead. The Eagles added an unearned run in the top of the ninth, but Wofford was able to take the first game 8-5.
Wofford starter Pete Noordsy threw 5.2 innings in his final career start. Noordsy gave up four runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Senior Mason Bradley (1-2) went 2.1 innings and did not allow a hit for his first career win. Alex Wilson threw the ninth and gave up one run on one hit.
Georgia Southern starter Justin Hess went 6.1 innings and gave up only one hit with ten strikeouts. He retired the last eleven batters faced in order. Josh Stevenson gave up one run on three hits. Sam Howard picked up one out. Kyle Rowe (6-2) worked an inning and gave up five runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Jared Cheek gave up two runs on one hit. Chris Myers went the final third of an inning and gave up one hit.
In game two, the Eagles got on the board first when Garren Palmer hit an RBI single to score an unearned run for a 1-0 lead. Wofford got the run back in the bottom of the first inning when Mac Doyle hit a solo home run over the left field fence. It was his 13 homer of the season and 47 of his career.
The Terriers left two runners on base in the bottom of the third inning. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Wofford had two runners on base after a walk to Konstantine Diamaduros and a single by Josh Hyman, but three straight strikeouts ended the scoring chance.
Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the seventh after a single by James Foster. In the top of the ninth, Eric Phillips singled and advanced to second on an error. A hit by pitch with two outs put another runner on base, but both were stranded. In the bottom of the ninth, Eric Brenk walked and moved to second on a stolen base. With two outs, James Foster hit a home run over the right field fence to win the game 3-1 for the Terriers. It was his second homer of the season and third of his career.
Wofford starter Cash Collins (5-7) threw a complete game, tying a career-high in innings pitched. He allowed four hits and one unearned run on the day with three strikeouts. It was his fourth career complete game and he ends his career eighth in school history in innings pitched with 243.1 and tenth in career wins.
Georgia Southern starter Will Middour went four innings and gave up one run on four hits with two strikeouts. Sam Howard threw 1.1 innings and allowed two hits with one strikeout. Heath Durand (1-1) went the final 3.1 innings and gave up two runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
The weekend series marked the final home games for a group of nine Wofford seniors, who were honored prior to the first game on Saturday. The nine seniors are: Mason Bradley, Cash Collins, Konstantine Diamaduros, Mac Doyle, James Foster, Pete Noorsdy, David Roney, Anthony Rowland, and Gus White.
