SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team opened its Southern Conference schedule with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18) loss to Georgia Southern Friday night in the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Wofford opened the first set with a 4-0 lead, only to see Georgia Southern come back tie the set at six. The Eagles pull out to 10-7, but Wofford answered and retied the set at 11. Neither team could pull away until Georgia Southern broke a tie at 19 with a 6-1 run to take the set 25-20.
Wofford again took the early lead in the second set as they went ahead 10-7. Georgia Southern cut the lead to one point, 13-12, but the Terriers answered as they extended the lead to 15-12. The Eagles eventually fought back and tied the set at 18, and closed out the set on a 7-4 run to claim the second set 25-22.
Georgia Southern opened up the lead early in the third set as they jumped out 20-10. Wofford responded with a 12-2 and to force a tie at 22. The Terriers continued to push as they kept the match alive with a 25-23 set four win.
The fourth set opened with the Eagles mounting a 7-2 lead. Wofford was able to trim the gap to 8-6, but was never able to take control of the set as they fell 25-18.
Georgia Southern outhit Wofford .309 to .237, but it was Wofford who held a seven to four block advantage.
Rachel Woodlee, who had 13 kills on 30 attempts with a.400 hitting percentage, led the Terriers offensively. Wendy Burnett and Taylor Baird followed with 12 kills each. Burnett’s 12 came on 19 attempts with two errors and a.526 hitting percentage. Amanda Liguori added 11 kills and picked up 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Bekah Dorsey also earned her sixth double-double as she had 33 assists ad 11 digs. Reagan Styles collected a team-high 15 digs and three service aces. Her 15 digs gives her 1,389 career digs putting her in third place all-time. Arden Anderson had three block assists giving her 303 career-block assists, just three shy of claiming the all-time record.
Meredith Paskert had 16 kills a .333 hitting percentage to plead the Eagles. Moriah Bellissimo added 13 kills, while Jamie DeRatt had 11 kills. Kate Van Dyke handed out 46 assists, while DeRatt earned a double-double with a match-high 17 kills.
Wofford will return to action Saturday at 6 p.m. against Davidson in the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
