Women’s Soccer Ties Elon, 1-1

Box Score ELON, N.C. – Sophomore forward Mary Beth Bleekrode scored the game-tying goal in the 37th minute as the Wofford women's soccer team earned a crucial point in Southern Conference play tying Elon University 1-1 at Rudd Field.

After the tie, Wofford moves to 6-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in SoCon play. Elon moves to 7-2-4 overall and 1-1-2 in the SoCon.

In the first half, Elon would open the scoring in the 19th minute when Nicole Dennion scored her ninth goal of the season on a header off a cross from Jennifer McGorty to give the Phoenix a 1-0 advantage.

The Terriers would have a great opportunity to tie in the 36th minute when sophomore forward Chloe Brackett had a shot saved.

Wofford would then equalize in the 37th minute when Bleekrode scored off a corner kick from senior midfielder Maggie Bosley knotting the score up at 1-1.

Elon would create one more great opportunity at the end of the half denied by Wofford's senior goalkeeper Kimberly Cohn as she saved Taylor Glenn's shot in the 45th minute keeping the game tied 1-1 going into the half.

In the second half, the Phoenix would create a couple of good chances in the first ten minutes, the best chance coming off Dennion's shot that was saved by Cohn in the 51st minute.

Wofford would respond to Elon's massive amounts of pressure with a great chance of its own when Bosley rifled a shot that was saved in the 73rd minute.

For the rest of the half, both teams continued to battle it out, none finding the back of the net in regular time forcing the game to go into overtime.

In the first overtime period, Elon would create the best chance in the 94th minute when Dennion would have another shot saved by Cohn.

In the second period, Wofford would have two chances in the 106th and 110th minutes as Brackett had a shot in each minute just sail high of the goal.

After a hard fought 110 minutes of play, both teams couldn't find a winner as the final score ended at 1-1.

For the match, Elon outshot Wofford 15-11 and won the battle of corners 7-2.

In goal for the Terriers, Cohn faced 15 Phoenix shots and made 11 saves. For Elon, Kate Murphy faced 11 Wofford shots and made five saves.

The women's soccer team returns to the pitch on Sunday October 13 when they return to Snyder Field to face UNC-Greensboro in Southern Conference play. The match will kick off at 2:00 pm.
