BOONE, N.C. – Senior Amanda Liguori became the fourth Terrier in history to record both 1,000 career digs and kills, helping the Wofford volleyball team to its third straight Southern Conference victory, 3-0, over Appalachian State Saturday night from Varsity Gym.
Liguori finished the match with nine kills and nine digs, tallying dig number 1,000 in the final set. Having reached 1,000 career kills earlier this season, the Jacksonville, Fla., native joined Cindy Vinyard (1990-93), Cristy Carter (1998-01) and Shanna Hughes (2006-09) as the four Terriers who are part of the 1,000-kill, 1,000-dig club.
"This was the first time this season everybody played to their ability at once," first-year head coach Ron Sweet said. "We have had single matches where certain individuals have been unbelievable, but not everybody. Tonight, seven people stepped up and it was really exciting to see.
"Amanda is such a fantastic defensive player. Someone in her position is not always noticed for defense, but Amanda has been a consistent presence for this program all four years. She is fun to watch on defense and I'm proud of her for reaching 1,000 digs."
For the match, Wofford (8-12, 3-3 SoCon) was led by senior Wendy Burnett and junior Taylor Baird, both of whom had a match-high 11 kills. Baird added six digs, two blocks and an ace for 13.5 points, while Burnett had 13 points with a solo block and an ace. Sophomore libero Jessica Graham led the match with 20 digs.
Appalachian State (11-9, 3-3 SoCon) got a team-high 10 kills from Lauren Gray.
Wofford outhit App State .314 (41-8-105) to .216 (40-15-116) on the evening, also winning the dig battle with 55 to App's 49. The Terriers put down 10 aces to App's four. The Mountaineers did win the battle of the block, 4-3.
The 2-0 road weekend helped the Terriers climb to .500 in Southern Conference play and get right back into the middle of the league standings.
"It was huge for our program to win that fifth set Friday against Western Carolina," Sweet said. "Then, to go in and beat a really good App State team, 3-0, was exactly what these girls needed right now. We are on a roll, playing well and the team is buying into the system we are implementing this season."
The momentum from Friday's win in Cullowhee carried over to Boone, where the Terriers earned their first victory at Appalachian State since Oct. 26, 2001. It began with an opening set in which Wofford never trailed. The Terriers took seven of the first 10 points for a four-point lead, bumping the cushion up to five at 11-6. App went on a run to score six of the next eight and tie the set at 13, but it was the only time the score would be level. Wofford immediately responded with the next three points, including one of Baird's set-high four kills. The lead grew back to five at 20-15 and a Mountaineer attack error got Wofford the opener by three.
Set two saw Appalachian State lead through the first half until Wofford scored three straight points to earn its first tie at 11. The lead changed hands three times over the next few points until the Terriers grabbed it for good at 15-14 and went on to tally four of the next five points for some breathing room at 19-15. Wofford's lead peaked at six ahead 23-17 and Baird put down the last of her set-high five kills to give the Terriers a two-set lead.
The third-set offense was headed by Burnett who hit .857 with six kills on seven attempts, while Liguori had five kills on 13 swings to hit .308. The duo helped Wofford outhit App State .341 to .128 and cruise to a sweep. The set did have six ties, but the last of them came at 7-7 before the Terriers scored the next four points and used a 9-2 run to take a 16-9 advantage and lead the rest of the way. Liguori put down the final kill and Wofford earned its third consecutive league victory.
The Wofford volleyball team takes a midweek trip to Greenville, S.C., next Wednesday to take on Furman.
