Box Score BOONE, N.C. – Sophomore midfielder Nestor Jaramillo had a goal and an assist, but the Wofford men's soccer team fell to its first loss in Southern Conference play 3-2 against the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Tuesday night.
In the first half, the Mountaineers would strike first in the 8th minute when Kojo Thompson cleaned up a pass across the box from Stanley Broaden to give them an early 1-0 advantage.
Wofford would then respond in the 14th minute when junior midfielder Carlos Dominguez-Gonzalez had a volley attempt miss wide.
Appalachian State would then have a good chance in the 24th minute when Broaden had a shot from eight-yards out saved by Wofford's freshman goalkeeper Garrett Closs.
The Terriers would find an equalizer in the 27th minute when junior midfielder Nick Orton scored his first goal of the season off a free kick from Jaramillo making the score 1-1.
Wofford would get another chance in the 39th minute when Orton stole a pass, but his shot into the goal was called back for a hand ball.
Both teams fought hard for chances the rest of the half, but neither team could find a goal as the score would be 1-1 going into halftime.
In the second half, the Mountaineers would retake the lead when Stephen Chapman would steal the ball from the back line, dribble into the box and score with his right to make the score 2-1 in the 47th minute.
Less than one minute later, Appalachian State would extend its lead 3-1 in the 48th minute when Harrison Delbridge would score off an assist from Alex Herbst in the 48th minute.
The Terriers would create their first chance of the half in the 56th minute when junior defender Forrest Lasso had a header off a corner kick sail wide of the goal.
Wofford would have another great opportunity to get back into the match when sophomore midfielder Connor Davis had his one-on-one shot saved by Mountaineer goalkeeper Danny Free in the 67th minute.
Two more chances for the Terriers would come in the 74th minute when Davis had a shot saved by Free, then Jaramillo would take a shot on the rebound that missed just wide.
The Terriers would bring the game back within one in the 81st minute when they were awarded a penalty and Jaramillo stepped up and buried it into the left side of the goal to make the score 3-2.
Dominguez-Gonzalez would create a great chance to tie the game in the 85th minute when he chested a cross and
volleyed a shot on target that was tipped over the bar by Free.
Wofford would have two good chances in the final minute of the match when Lasso had a header blocked, and then senior forward Chase West would follow up with a shot on the rebound that was saved by Free. Despite their efforts, the Terriers would fall to the Mountaineers 3-2.
For the match, Wofford outshot Appalachian State 17-8 and won the corner battle 9-2.
At goalkeeper for the Terriers, Closs fell to his fifth loss of the season facing eight shots and making one save. Free earned his third win of the season for the Mountaineers facing 17 shots and making seven saves.
Wofford will return to the pitch on Saturday October 19 when they return home to Snyder Field to take on Southern Conference opponent UNCG at 6:00 pm.
