KENNESAW, Ga. – Senior Brent McKenzie shot a 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday in the final round of the Pinetree Intercollegiate, completing the tournament tied for 15th place with a three-round total of 6-over-par 222 and leading the Wofford College men's golf team to an eighth-place finish.
Wofford carded a final-round 13-over-par 301 for a three-round total of 38-over-par 902 (300-301-301). The Terriers finished two strokes behind seventh-place Florida Gulf Coast (+36, 900) and six strokes ahead of both Samford and Ball State (+44, 908). Kennesaw State won the tournament at 8-over-par 872, while Winthrop's Taylor Dickson shot a final-round 2-under-par 70 to win the individual title at 3-under par.
The 12-team, 69-man field competed in overcast conditions with temperatures ranging from the mid-to-upper 60s at the par 72, 7,108-yard Pinetree Country Club. All five Terriers began final-round play at the 10th tee and took advantage of the back nine with a team total of 1-under par heading to the front. The hot play did not continue and the Terriers combined to shoot 10-over par on the final three holes for the eighth-place finish.
McKenzie was under par through most of the day, birdieing the par-4, 418-yard 10th hole to get his final round started. A bogey on No. 14 put the senior back to even, until an eagle at the par-5, 506-yard No. 16 dropped McKenzie to 2-under par. At the conclusion of the front nine, McKenzie was 1-under after a bogey on the par-3 17th.
A bogey on the par-4 third hole bumped McKenzie back to even, but four holes later he sunk his second birdie of the day on the par-4, 366-yard seventh to get back into red figures on the round and 3-over par for the tournament. After making par on Nos. 8 and 9 in the first and second rounds, McKenzie concluded his final round with back-to-back bogeys to finish the tournament at 6-over.
Freshman Andrew Novak completed his tournament with a final-round 3-over-par 75. Novak had three birdies and two bogeys on the back nine, followed by no birdies and four bogeys on the front. Even-par through 15 holes on his final round, the freshman had an unfortunate finish with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 7, 8 and 9. Novak took a tie for 26th place with a 9-over-par 225.
Junior Brannon Hudson also carded a final-round 3-over 75, but had an unfortunate ending. After four birdies and a double bogey on the back nine, Hudson parred the first four holes of the front to sit 2-under on his round. He played the final five holes at 5-over with bogeys on Nos. 5, 6 and 8, along with a double bogey on the finishing ninth. Hudson tied for 40th at 13-over-par 229.
Senior Chandler Brazeal posted two final-round birdies, six bogeys and a triple bogey on the par-4, 440-yard 13th hole to shoot 7-over-par 79 and complete the tournament tied for 37th place at 12-over par. Brazeal's birdies came at No. 14 and No. 5, but the senior ended his round with three consecutive bogeys after heading into Tuesday at 5-over par.
Last week's co-champion of the Donald Ross Intercollegiate, George Perkovich, earned a tie for 51st place at 19-over-par 235. Perkovich had three birdies, six bogeys and a triple bogey for a final-round 6-over 78.
The Wofford men's golf team competes again in two weeks at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate, Nov. 3-5, in Cashiers, N.C.
