Box Score ATLANTA, GA. – Sophomore midfielder Connor Davis scored in the 22nd minute as the Wofford men's soccer team fell to the Panthers of Georgia State University 2-1 in overtime at the GSU Soccer Complex on Tuesday evening.
With the loss, Wofford's six-game winning streak is snapped at six and they move to 6-4-1 overall. The Panthers improve to 4-5-1 overall on the season with the win.
In the first half, Wofford had the first opportunity in the 7th minute when freshman forward Matthew Aurednik had a header inside the six-yard box off a cross go just wide of the goal.
The Panthers would respond with an opportunity in the 11th minute when he attempted a volley outside the 18-yard box that went just wide.
Wofford would have another great chance getting fouled right outside the box in the 16th minute, but sophomore midfielder Nestor Jaramillo's free kick just slipped past the right post.
The Terriers would then strike first in the 22nd minute when Davis caught a pass from Aurednik and buried a shot from eight-yards out past the goalkeeper for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Wofford would have another great opportunity at the end of the half in the 42nd minute when senior forward Blair Gaines attempted to lob the keeper from eight-yards but just clipped the top of the crossbar keeping the score at 1-0 going into the half.
In the second half, Georgia State would tie the match up 1-1 in the 53rd minute when Stephen McGill scored third goal of the year off a cross from Salomon Lorenzano.
The Panthers would create a great opportunity to take the lead in the 68th minute when Michael Nwiloh's header off a cross missed just wide left of the goal.
Both teams would create opportunities for the rest of the half but neither could capitalize forcing the game into overtime.
In the first overtime period, Wofford would create the first chance when Davis had a header saved in the 93rd minute.
The Panthers would score the game-winning goal in the 95th minute when Cory Plasker scored on a tap-in assisted on a header by McGill off a free kick by Aaron Jones.
For the match, Wofford outshot the Panthers 15-7, while Georgia State had the edge in corners 8-7.
In goal for the Terriers, freshman Garrett Closs took the loss facing seven shots and making two saves. For Georgia State, CJ Cochran faced 15 Terrier shots and made four saves earning the victory.
The Terriers return home to Snyder Field for a big Southern Conference matchup on Saturday October 12 when they host #16 Elon University at 7:00 pm.
