Men’s Soccer Returns to SoCon Championship Beating Furman, 2-1

Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. – Sophomore midfielder Connor Davis scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute off a volley from 16 yards as the Southern Conference Regular Season champions and the number one seed Wofford men's soccer team came back from a goal down to defeat the fourth seeded Furman Paladins 2-1 in Southern Conference semifinals at Stone Soccer Stadium.

The Terriers return to the Southern Conference Championship match for the second year in a row and third time in five years. Wofford will be seeking its second tournament title and first since 2009.

With the win, Wofford improves to 11-6-1 overall on the season and will face the number two seed Elon University in the championship match on Sunday November 17th at 1 p.m. With the loss, Furman falls to 11-5-2 overall on the season.

Wofford created pressure early creating the first opportunities of the match. The Terriers would take two shots in the first three minutes of the match. The first one was from freshman forward Matthew Aurednik missing wide and junior midfielder Nick Orton had his blocked by a defender.

Despite dominating possession and opportunities in the first 10 minutes, the Paladins scored off a deflected cross in the box in the 11th minute as Bobby Edet redirected the cross to give Furman a 1-0 lead.

The Terriers would try to respond moments later, but Aurednik's header off a cross from 12 yards out missed high over the goal in the 12th minute. He would then create another chance five minutes later, but his effort was saved by Furman goalkeeper Sven Lissek.

Senior forward Chase West would continue Wofford's search for an equalizer when his volley off a bouncing ball in the 28th minute was blocked by a defender, and then his shot one minute later off a corner kick missed wide left of the net.

The teams battled back and forth in a physical first half. Despite Wofford outshooting Furman 7-1 in the half, the Terriers trailed 1-0 going into the break.

In the second half, Wofford put pressure on the Paladins in the 48th minute and it paid off. West drew a foul in the box and junior midfielder Carlos Dominguez-Gonzalez converted from the penalty spot tying the game at 1-1. It was Dominguez-Gonzalez's fourth goal of the season.

The Paladins would take a chance from long range, but Michael Gandier's shot sailed high over the goal in the 52nd minute.

Furman would continue to create chances in the 57th minute as Martin Ontiveros would take two shots with the first going wide and the second tipped over the bar by Wofford's freshman goalkeeper Garrett Closs. Kevin Pahl would try a shot one minute later, but his shot sailed high over the goal.

Edet would then have a chance outside the 18 yard box off a pass from Ontiveros in the 62nd minute, but his shot missed wide left of the goal.

The Terriers would then create two good opportunities in the 75th minute. Dominguez-Gonzalez would have his shot blocked by a Furman defender, followed by junior defender Forrest Lasso having his header off a cross miss wide right of the goal.

Ontiveros would have a great opportunity in the 77th minute to find a goal, but his shot from the left side of the box missed wide right of the goal.

Davis would then score his 11th goal of the season in the 78th minute to give the Terriers a 2-1 lead. Junior defender Ryan Hurst played a ball into the box, Furman goalkeeper Lissek punched the ball out, and Davis hit a volley first-time over Lissek to give the Terriers the lead.

The Paladins would get a good chance to find a second goal in the 81st minute off a free kick, but Lewis Hawke's shot off a pass missed high over the goal.

Wofford would fight out the final nine minutes to hold on to the 2-1 win to advance to its third Southern Conference Championship final in five years.

For the match, Wofford outshot the Paladins 11-9 and both teams were even on corner kicks at 5-5.

Head coach Ralph Polson was pleased with the team's performance and knew it was going to be a battle until the end. "I honestly thought we were going into overtime", said Polson. "I was proud of the way our boys played for all 90 minutes of the match. They deserve this win".

In goal for the Terriers, Closs earned his eighth win of the season facing nine Furman shots, allowed one goal, and made one save. Lissek faced 11 Terrier shots, allowed one goal, and made one save.

Wofford will face the number two seed Elon University, a 5-1 winner over the number six seed Georgia Southern in Friday's first semifinal, in the title match Sunday. That contest – a rematch of the 2012 final, won by Elon 2-1 – will kick off at 1 p.m. and air live on ESPN3, with Darren Goldwater and Charlie Slagle on the call.

The tournament winner earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship. The selection show can be seen at NCAA.com on Monday at noon.
