Men’s Soccer Falls in SoCon Championship 1-0 in Overtime

Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team ended its season with a heartbreaking loss to Elon 1-0 in two overtime periods in the Southern Conference Championship game Sunday afternoon. Elon forward Jason Waterman scored the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute clinching the tournament title for the Phoenix.

With the loss, the Terriers finish the season 11-7-1 overall and will miss out on a chance to go to the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament. With the win, Elon wins its third consecutive Southern Conference Tournament Title and moves on to the NCAA Tournament.


The Terriers created the first opportunities of the match when sophomore midfielder Nestor Jaramillo took a shot from 25 yards out that missed wide right of the goal in the fourth minute. Sophomore Connor Davis would also create a chance less than a minute later when his header off a free kick missed just wide right of the post.

Elon would then answer with a chance of their own in the eighth minute, but Matt Wescoe shot went straight to Wofford freshman goalkeeper Garrett Closs. Caue Da Silva would then attempt a volley outside the 18 yard box five minutes later in the 13th minute, but his shot flew harmlessly wide right of the goal.

Junior defender Forrest Lasso would give the Terriers another chance with their added pressure, but his shot in the 23rd minute was blocked by an Elon defender.

Wofford would press again three minutes after the first media timeout in the 26th minute when junior midfielder Carlos Dominguez-Gonzalez rifled a volley from 20 yards out that sailed just high over the goal.

Davis would attempt a shot three minutes later in the 29th minute, but his long-range shot from 30 yards out sailed right of the goal. Jaramillo would take a shot from long distance as well in the 31st minute, but it was saved easily by Elon goalkeeper Nathan Dean.

The Phoenix would then get two consecutive opportunities in the 32nd minute when their first shot by Wescoe hit the top of the crossbar, and then midfielder James Brace shot the rebound at skimmed the right post.

The Terriers would answer with another chance of their own but sophomore midfielder Charlie Keeley had a header on a corner kick blocked by a defender in the 35th minute.

Lasso would have another opportunity to put the Terriers in front in the 42nd minute, but his header off a long throw in missed high and wide of the goal.

Sophomore forward Connor Copeland would take the final opportunity of the half but his shot was blocked with 15 seconds remaining keeping the score all tied up at 0-0. Wofford dominated opportunities in the half outshooting Elon 9-4 but couldn't come away with any goals.

In the second half, both teams would be at an even battle with no shots for the first 18 minutes of the period. Wofford would create the first chance of the half in the 63rd minute when senior forward Chase West found Copeland inside the box with a cross, but his header missed just wide right.

Closs had to make a big play for Wofford in the 68th minute when he made a one-on-one save on Da Silva's chance at goal keeping the match scoreless. Closs then made another save in the 70th minute off of Miguel Salazar's long range shot.

Elon took another shot from long range in the 73rd minute, but the shot by Brace sailed high over the goal.

Wofford would get another great opportunity when Copeland drew a foul 25 yards away from goal in the 76th minute, but Jaramillo's shot on the free kick was saved by Dean. Junior defender Ryan Hurst would have a chance in the 79th minute but his shot missed high over the goal.

Wofford would get two opportunities with three minutes remaining in the 87th minute. Jaramillo had the first chance miss wide right, and then Hurst would have a second shot from long range miss high over the goal.

Elon would get the final shot of the 90 minutes with 20 seconds remaining, but Charles Howard's shot from distance missed wide left of the goal sending the match into overtime with the score at 0-0.

In the first overtime, Waterman would create the first chance for Elon just inside the 18 yard box, but his shot sailed wide of the net in the 93rd minute. Wofford would then respond four minutes later when Jaramillo would take a shot off a pass from Keeley but it was blocked by a Phoenix defender.

Waterman would get another great chance for Elon, but his shot from 12 yards out, but his shot missed just wide right of the goal in the 100th minute sending the match into a second overtime period.

Copeland would have another great chance for the Terriers creating the first of the second overtime period, but his header off a cross missed wide right of the goal.

Elon would score the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute when Waterman would place a shot past Closs from 12 yards out to clinch the Championship for the Phoenix.

For the match, Wofford dominated most of possession and chances outshooting Elon 16-10. The Phoenix won the corner battle 7-4.

In goal for the Terriers, Closs finished the season 8-7 overall facing 10 Elon shots and made two saves. For the Phoenix, Dean improves to 15-4-2 on the season facing 16 Terrier shots and made two saves earning the shutout.

Davis, Dominguez-Gonzalez, and Padula would earn All-Tournament honors for their outstanding performances in the Terriers two matches against Furman and Elon.
