Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team defeated the Spartans of UNCG in penalty kicks 5-4 after a scoreless 0-0 game in regulation to advance to the semifinals of the Southern Conference tournament. This is the first time that the Terriers have advanced to the semifinals in the Southern Conference tournament since 2002.
Wofford will face the number two seeded Elon University in the semifinals on Snyder Field in Spartanburg, South Carolina on Friday November 8 at 7:30 p.m.
In the first half of regulation, the Spartans would create the first chance of the half in the second minute when Lauren Lover took a shot from 18 yards that missed wide right of the goal.
Mackenzie Noel had the first shot on goal for UNCG, but her shot was saved by Wofford's junior goalkeeper Kara Boggs in the eighth minute.
Wofford would have its first chance of the half in the 19th minute when sophomore forward Mary Beth Bleekrode had a free kick opportunity that she missed just over the goal.
Boggs would make another great save for the Terriers in the 20th minute denying Noel's shot on frame.
The Wofford defense would continue their heroics in the 28th minute on two Spartan opportunities. Noel would have her initial shot off a cross saved by Boggs, and then her rebound shot was cleared off the line by a Terriers defender.
Boggs would continue her stellar play when she denied Zoe Fishman's header inside the six-yard box keeping the game scoreless in the 31st minute.
The Terriers would create a good chance in the 37th minute on a counter-attack, when sophomore forward Vicki Hill took a shot that missed just wide left.
Junior Emily Gaid would have one more chance for the Terriers at the end of the half, but her shot was saved by UNCG goalkeeper Jamie Simmons keeping the score at 0-0.
In the second half, the Spartans would test Boggs again in the 47th minute. She made a kick save on Chesney White's shot off a corner heading to the near post.
UNCG created in the 54th minute, by Ashley Stokes' shot from inside the six-yard box missed just wide of the post.
After multiple opportunities from the Spartans, Wofford had a chance to take the lead, but senior forward Emily Bougas would have her shot blocked by a defender in the 72nd minute. One minute later, sophomore forward Chloe Brackett would then take a shot of her own from long-range but it missed wide right.
Boggs would come up huge again denying Tracy Wolf three shot opportunities in a four minute span. The biggest save was the first one when she made a one-on-one kick save in the 74th minute.
Wofford had a great chance in the 84th minute on a free kick, by senior defender Maggie Bosley's shot was saved by Simmons. With that final chance, the Terriers and the Spartans would head into overtime with the score at 0-0.
In the first overtime period, UNCG would create the first chance when Wolf's shot was saved by Boggs in the 92nd minute. Wofford would respond two minutes later, but Brackett's shot was saved by Simmons.
Wofford would have another chance created by junior midfielder Maureen Buff, but her shot was blocked by a defender in the 99th minute. UNCG would have the final chance of the period in the 100th minute, but her shot missed wide right sending the match into a second overtime.
In the second overtime period, junior midfielder Emily Gaid created the first chance of the period for the Terriers. Her header shot off a cross was tipped over the crossbar by Simmons in the 103rd minute.
Wofford created another great chance when junior forward Annika Jansson had a shot from 12 yards out miss just wide of the goal in the 106th minute. Jansson then created the best chance of the period when she ripped a shot in the 108th minute that hit the post.
The Terriers put high pressure on the Spartans for the final minutes of regulation, but could not find a winner as the match would head into a penalty shootout.
As the ninth penalty taker for Wofford, freshman forward Faith Lifer finished the final penalty to give the Terriers a 5-4 win.
For the match, UNCG outshot Wofford 22-14 and also won the corner battle 8-4.
In goal for Wofford, Boggs had an unbelievable game making 15 saves in regulation and made two saves in the penalty shootout. For UNCG, Simmons faced 14 Terrier shots and made six saves.
