Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team came back from a two goal deficit, but couldn't hold on in overtime as they fell to East Tennessee State 3-2 in overtime on Senior Night at Snyder Field Tuesday night.
With the loss, the Terriers fall to 10-6-1 overall while the Buccaneers improve to 8-5-4 with the win.
In the first half, Wofford created the first chance of the match in the 3rd minute when sophomore midfielder Nestor Jaramillo rifled a shot outside the 18-yard box that was parried away by ETSU goalkeeper Ryan Coulter.
The Buccaneers created their first chance one minute later when Willi Nordenstrom had his shot from inside the 18 miss wide right.
Junior defender Forrest Lasso had a great chance off of a throw in to capitalize, but his header sailed just wide right of the goal in the 12th minute.
ESTU would begin to put on some pressure as they forced freshman goalkeeper Garrett Closs to make a couple of big saves. His biggest saves came in the 18th minute when he had to make a double save on two shots to keep the game level at 0-0.
The Buccaneers would take a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when Nordenstrom took a shot from 15 yards that deflected off a defender and Closs and went into the net.
Joao Ramalho would then extend the ETSU lead to 2-0 seven minutes later when he received a pass from Itode Fubara just inside the box and fire home his second goal of the season.
Undaunted, the Terriers were able to score right before the break to bring the game within one when senior defender Blair Gaines cross a ball to senior forward Dennis Moore, who laid the ball off to Jaramillo to finish inside the box in the 43rd minute making the score 2-1 at the half.
In the second half, Closs had to make another big save starting the half when he denied Jonny Campbell's shot in the 49th minute. Closs then had to make another save in the 76th minute on David Geno's shot to keep the game at 2-1.
Wofford would tie up the match 2-2 when Lasso would head in a long throw in from senior defender Billy Padula in the 80th minute. For Lasso it was his seventh goal of the season and the assist for Padula was his eleventh.
ETSU would get the final chance in regulation to score the game-winner, but Ramalho's shot in the 89th minute was blocked by a defender sending the match into overtime.
In the overtime period, the Terriers had a great opportunity to grab a game-winner, but freshman forward Matthew Aurednik had his shot inside the six-yard box off a long ball was denied by Coulter in the 91st minute.
The Buccaneers would score the game-winning goal in the 99th minute when Campbell's cross into the box found Geno who scored his third goal of the season making the final score 3-2.
For the match, ETSU outshot the Terriers 18-14, but both teams had the same number of corners tied at 4-4.
Closs fell to his sixth loss of the season at goalkeeper facing 18 shots, allowed three goals, and made five saves. Coulter earned his eighth win of the season facing 14 Terrier shots, allowed two goals, and made four saves.
The men's soccer team returns to the pitch on Friday November 15, when they play in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina. The opponent and time will be determined after Saturday November 5. The Terriers will play the winner of the match between the number four seed Furman University and fifth seeded Davidson College.
