SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis team was defeated by the 49ers of Charlotte 7-0 on a chilly Thursday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.  The Terriers fall to 2-5 for the season while Charlotte improves to 4-5.

In doubles action, Charlotte pulled in front early taking a quick lead in all three match-ups.  At the No. 2 spot, the 49er pair of Jack Williams and Jordi Massalle Ferrer got the better of Wofford’s Jackson Keith and Parks Thompson 8-4.  Charlotte secured the doubles point shortly after when Krzysztof Kwasniewicz and Kamil Khalil topped Graham Duncan and David Sklar 8-4 at the No. 3 position.  The No. 1 match-up between Terriers Rob Galloway and Walker Heffron and Charlotte’s Paul Cisti and Alex Calott would go unfinished with the 49ers leading 6-7.

On the singles side, Charlotte won three quick straight set matches to claim the victory.  First, Cisti defeated Drew Superstein (6-2, 6-2) from the No. 2 position.  Then, Heffron battled hard but fell to Kwasniewicz (7-6, 6-2) in the No. 4 spot.  Finally, Duncan came up just short against Khalil (6-4, 7-5) at No. 5 to give the 49ers the match.  The last three match-ups would all go to a third set, but Wofford would come up short in all three.

“Losing a bunch of close singles matches never taste very good and this one is no different,” said Head Coach Rod Ray after the loss.  “Charlotte is a tough team and today they executed better than we did on some key points. I don’t think we lost any confidence from this match, but we definitely need something sweet to get the bitterness out. “

The Terriers return to action on March 2, when they travel to Georgia Southern to open up Southern Conference play. The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
