ELON, N.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis team was defeated on the road at Elon, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The Terriers fall to 2-8 and 0-3 in the Southern Conference for the year, while the Phoenix improve to 7-4 and 3-0 in conference play.
On the doubles side, Elon swept all three matches to claim the doubles point. First, Juan Madrid and Jordan Kaufman defeated Wofford’s Parks Thompson and Graham Duncan 8-5 at the No. 3 position. Next, #34 Cameron Silverman and Stefan Fortmann topped Rob Galloway and Walker Heffron 8-4 in the No. 1 spot. Finally, Brain Kowalski and Robert Lindgren edged past Wofford’s Jackson Keith and Tom Wood 9-7 at No. 2.
In singles action, Elon jumped in front quickly, winning the first set in four of six match-ups. The Phoenix clinched the victory after four straight set wins to open singles play. Lindgren beat Keith (6-1, 6-1) at the No. 3 spot, Galloway fell to #38 Cameron Silverman (6-0, 6-2) in the No. 1 spot, Kowalski bested Heffron (6-3, 6-1) at No. 4, and Fortman defeated Drew Superstein (6-2, 6-3) at the No. 2 position.
The day’s final two matches went to third set super tie-breakers. In the No. 5 spot, Duncan won his first set against Madrid 6-3, dropped the second 6-1, and fell 10-6 in the tie-breaker to give Elon their sixth point. Wood earned Wofford’s loan point after he defeated Arboleda in the first set, dropped a tight second, but rallied to win the super tie-breaker (6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8)) at No. 6.
The Terriers will return to the court on Wednesday, March 20, when they travel to Charleston to face The Citadel. The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
