BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – The Wofford women’s tennis team was defeated on the road by Samford Sunday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center. The Terriers drop to 5-10 this season and 1-4 in the Southern Conference, while the Bulldogs improve to 7-10 and 2-4 in conference play.
On the doubles side, Samford won two quick matches to claim the point. First Kristin Lewis and Stephanie N’tcha topped Sarah Evans and Othilia Lindqvist (8-2) at No. 1. Then, Jessica Northcutt and Emily Mallory beat Mareli Sanchez and Emily Przystawski (8-2) in the No. 3 spot. In a very close match-up at the No. 3 position, Carita Moolman and Adri Lochner outlasted Wofford’s Julia Paulson and Lucy Schermerhorn (9-7).
In singles action, Samford won five of six matches in straight sets to clinch the victory. Lewis beat Evans (6-2, 6-2) in the
No. 1 spot. At the No. 2 position, N’tcha edged Audrey Coventry in a tight second set to claim the win (6-0, 6-4). Moolman defeated Sanchez (6-1, 6-3) at the No. 4. Schermerhorn fell to Mallory (6-1, 6-0) in the No. 5 spot. AnnMarie Lyon fought off Lindqvist in two tough sets (6-3, 6-3) at the No. 6 position.
The Final match of the day was a tight three setter between NorthCutt and Paulson in the No. 3 spot. Paulson won the first set 6-4, but Northcutt responded with a 6-4 win of her own in the second set. With the match decided, they played a super tie-breaker instead of a third set. Northcutt maintained her momentum to win the tie-breaker (10-4).
The Terriers will return to the court on Friday, March 29, when they host the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Reeves Tennis Center.
