ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford College men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Winthrop Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track. The Terriers had two first place finishes and set five school records.
On Friday, freshman Sloane Brandon set a school record in the women’s 100 meters with a time of 13.37 and also set the school mark in the long jump at 4.56 meters. Shaakira Brown broke the school mark in the 100 meter hurdles at 16.90. Kathleen Woods finished eleventh in the shot put and set a new school record in the discus at 34.30 meters. In the men’s 5000 meters, Russell Baker and Hunter McGahee were eleventh and twelfth respectively. Tevin Johnson was fourth in the men’s long jump at 6.95 meters.
On the second day of the meet for the women, Sam Hughes won the 3000 meter steeplechase in 11:11.37. Her time beat the previous Wofford record by 22 seconds. Alyssa Burkert took first place in the 800 meters in 2:13.84, while Katie Kessler was third with a time of 2:15.27 and Nicole Klasnic was fifth in 2:17.17. In the 1500 meters, Alyssa Burkert was second in 4:43.71 and Nicole Klasnic finished third in 4:47.61. The 4x400 meter relay team as fourth overall.
For the men on day two, Ryan Doyle was third in the 3000 meter steeplechase at 9:48.66. Andrew McCurry was sixth in the javelin at 38.83 meters. Kyle Hofmann was twelfth in the 800 meters at 2:02.59. Tevin Johnson was fourth in the high jump at 1.90 meters.
Next weekend the squads will host the Terrier relays on Saturday, April 6 at Spartanburg High School. The final meet of the season will be the Southern Conference Championships on April 20 and 21 in Statesboro, Georgia.
