SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team split a doubleheader with Davidson on Friday night at Russell C. King Field. Davidson won the first game 3-2, with all three runs scored in the second inning for the Wildcats. In the second game, the Terriers scored eight runs in the sixth inning to win 10-8.
Wofford is now 17-27 on the season and 8-15 in the Southern Conference. Davidson is 13-28 overall and 8-15 in conference play.
In the first game, Davidson loaded the bases in the top of the second with two singles and a hit by pitch. Lee Miller hit a triple down the right line to score all three runners as the Wildcats took a 3-0 lead.
Wofford opened the bottom of the second with a double by James Plaisted and a single by Matt Ramsay. Matthew Pelt hit into a double play, but Plaisted scored on the play to make it a 3-1 game. Davidson added two hits in the top of the third, but both were left on base. The Wildcats had two more hits in the top of the fourth, but did not add a run.
Both teams were scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, with each team recording one hit. Davidson loaded the bases on three singles in the top of the seventh, but a double play ended the scoring chance. Wofford left two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Wildcats loaded the bases in the top of the eight on an error, single, and walk. Two strikeouts ended the inning with the three runners stranded.
In the bottom of the eighth, Wofford had a single by Demetrius Jennings and Alec Paradowski was hit by a pitch. A single by Josh Hyman scored drove in Jennings for a 3-2 game, but a double play ended the inning. Davidson left one on base in the top of the ninth and Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
Wofford starter Tanner Hawley (0-3) went 6.1 innings and gave up three runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Matthew Milburn worked an inning and did not allow a run on three hits. Will Stillman threw 1.2 innings and did not allow a hit with two strikeouts.
Davidson starter Ryan Lowe (4-6) threw a complete game. He allowed only two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
In game two, the Wildcats had a double and single in the top of the second. A two-out single by Lee Miller drove in one run for a 1-0 lead. Wofford left one on base in the bottom of the second. Davidson loaded the bases in the top of the third on three walks. A fourth walk made it a 2-0 game. Sam Foy hit a grand slam home run over the right field fence for a 6-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Clark Wise was hit by a pitch. He scored on a triple by Alec Paradowski and a ground-out by Josh Hyman scored Paradowski to make it a 6-2 game. Davidson added two hits in the top of the fourth, but both runners were left on base.
After a scoreless fifth, Wofford had a walk and a single by Seth Neely to open the bottom of the sixth. James Plaisted added a single to load the bases. A double by Matt Ramsay down the left line drove in three runs to make it a 6-5 game. A bunt single by Luke Feisal added a run to tie the game at six and an RBI single by Demetrius Jennings gave the Terriers a 7-6 lead. A wild pitch and a ground-out made it a 9-6 score. Wofford added a run on a sacrifice fly by Seth Neely for a 10-6 lead after six innings.
Davidson had two runners reach base in the top of the eighth on errors. A single loaded the bases and a walk allowed a run to cross the plate for a 10-7 score. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth. The Wildcats had a single and a walk to open the ninth inning. A ground-out scored one run to make it 10-8 before a strikeout ended the game.
Wofford starter Jesse Morris (7-3) threw six innings and gave up six runs on seven hits with ten strikeouts. Eric Eck earned his ninth save of the season by going three innings and giving up two runs on two hits with three strikeouts. The nine saves ties a Wofford single season record and he has moved into second place on the career saves list with 16.
Davidson starter Rob Bain went five innings and allowed two hits with five strikeouts. Bryan DaCanal allowed six runs on five hits with one strikeout. Jip Richards went the final three innings and did not allow a hit with two strikeouts.
Wofford and Davidson will play the third game in the series at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, weather permitting. The Terrier host Winthrop on Tuesday night at Fluor Field in Greenville.
