Women’s Soccer Defeats UNC Asheville, 1-0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore forward Chloe Brackett scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute as the Wofford women's soccer team earned its first victory of the season defeating UNC Asheville, 1-0 at Snyder Field. With the win, the Terriers improve to 1-2-1 on the season. The Bulldogs fall to 2-1-0 overall after the loss.

In the first half, both teams had opportunities to go in front. UNC Asheville had the first attempt of the match when Amanda Dailor had a shot that hit the crossbar. Wofford's first opportunity came in the 15th minute when Brackett fired a shot from 18 yards away that hit the far right post. The Terriers would have another great opportunity in the half when sophomore forward Mary Beth Bleekrode had a free kick that was saved and punched out of play by the Bulldogs junior goalkeeper Heather Muller in the 26th minute. Both teams fought through the rest of the half creating some chances, but the score was all tied up 0-0 at the break.

In the second half, the pressure from the Terriers paid off in the 54th minute. Senior midfielder Alex Kachulis found junior midfielder Maureen Buff, who quickly found Brackett just outside the 18-yard box. Brackett then fired home a shot from 23 yards out that beat Muller into the top of the net. The goal was Brackett's first of the season. Wofford continued to put on much pressure of the Bulldogs' defense, and forced Muller to make many saves. UNC Asheville had a couple attempts late in the match to try to even the score. Their best chance came in the 87th minute when Kennedy Garrett rifled a shot that was just wide of the goal. The Terriers held on to earn their first victory of the season.

For the match, Wofford outshot UNC Asheville 18-16, and won the corner kick battle 9-0.

For the Terriers, Cohn earned her first win and her second shutout of the season. She faced a total of 16 Bulldogs shots and made five saves. For UNC Asheville, Muller fell to her first loss of the year facing 18 Terrier shots and made a season-high 10 saves.

Wofford will be back in action on Sunday September 8th, when they travel to Boiling Springs, North Carolina to take on the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb University at 2:00 pm. The Terriers' next home match will be on Friday September 27th, when they host Francis Marion University at 7:00 pm.
