SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore midfielder Nestor Jaramillo scored twice as the Wofford men's soccer team defeated Jacksonville University 3-1 at Snyder Field this afternoon. With its second win in a row, the Terriers improve to 2-3-1 overall. With the loss, the Dolphins fall to 1-2-1 on the season.
In the first half, the Terriers put pressure on the Dolphins in the first eight minutes of the game creating multiple scoring opportunities. The best chance came in the 7th minute when sophomore midfielder Connor Davis had a header off a corner kick saved by Jacksonville's redshirt freshman goalkeeper Marc Meny.
After the early pressure, Wofford would then be rewarded in the 22nd minute as Davis back heeled a bouncing ball to Jaramillo, who hit a thunderous shot into the top left corner of the net making the score 1-0. For Jaramillo, it was his second goal of the season, and it was Davis' first assist.
Wofford dominated the half and outshot the Dolphins 7-4, but would go into the half still holding a 1-0 advantage.
In the second half, Jaramillo would score his second of the match for the Terriers in the 51st minute when he received a pass from Davis 14 yards out, took a touch, and fired a shot from 12 yards into the lower left corner of the goal. The goal was Jaramillo's third of the season making the score 2-0.
Wofford created many more opportunities and capitalized once again in the 68th minute when senior defender Billy Padula's long throw in found Davis who headed the ball from inside the six-yard box into the net making the score 3-0. For Davis, the goal was his team-high fourth goal of the season.
Jacksonville would create some opportunities late in the match, and finally score a goal in the 88th minute when freshman midfielder Jack Burns rifled a shot inside the six-yard box off a driven pass from junior forward Matheus Saroli making the final score 3-1.
For the match, the Terriers outshot the Dolphins 18-9, while Jacksonville won the corner battle 7-3.
In goal for Wofford, freshman Joe Wichmann earned his second victory of the season facing nine Dolphins shots and made one save. For Jacksonville, Meny fell to his second loss of the season facing 18 Terrier shots and made five saves.
The Wofford men's soccer team will be back in action on Wednesday September 18th when they travel across town to face USC Upstate at 7:00 pm. The next home match at Snyder Field is on Saturday September 21st when they host their first Southern Conference game of the year against the Davidson Wildcats. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
