Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior midfielder Maureen Buff scored the game-winning goal, and sophomore forward Chloe Brackett scored the second as the Wofford women's soccer team defeated The Citadel 2-0 in its Southern Conference opener Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field.
The Terriers are now winners of five straight matches, improving their record to 5-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in Southern Conference play. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 2-5-2 overall, and 0-2-0 in the Southern Conference.
In the first half, Wofford had an opportunity in the first two minutes of the game when freshman defender Tanner Kaplan took a shot from 25-yards and watched as it hit the crossbar. The Terriers again would continue to take chances as senior midfielder Maggie Bosley had a shot saved in the 11th minute.
Bosley would have another great opportunity in the 39th minute when her effort on goal was saved by Bulldogs goalkeeper Naomi Carter. For the entire first half, Wofford would keep firing away shots and creating great opportunities to score outshooting the Bulldogs 13-1. In the end, both teams would go into the break all tied up 0-0.
In the second half, the pressure would continue from the Terriers as Brackett had another shot saved in the 48th minute. The Citadel would get their first great opportunity of the match in the 64th minute when Ruth Leiva had a shot from 18-yards out saved by senior goalkeeper Kimberly Cohn.
Wofford would finally make the breakthrough in the 66th minute when Buff dribbled the ball into the left side of the 18-yard box and rifled a shot into the top right corner of the net. For Buff, it was her second goal of the season.
In the final ten minutes, the Bulldogs would create some good opportunities to try to tie up the game. The Citadel had its best chance in the 82nd minute when Lea Raedle had a shot from just outside the 18-yard box saved by Cohn.
The Terriers would seal the 2-0 victory with four seconds remaining when Brackett got hold of a clearance at midfield, beat the last defender, dribbled past the goalkeeper and scored her fourth goal of the season.
For the match, Wofford outshot The Citadel 31-5 and the Bulldogs won the corner battle 5-4.
In goal for the Terriers, Cohn earned her fourth shutout of the season and improved her season record to 5-1-1. She faced five Bulldogs' shots and made two saves. For The Citadel, Carter fell to her fifth loss of the season facing 31 Terrier shots and made 11 saves.
The women's soccer team will be back in action on Thursday October 3rd when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take on Southern Conference opponent Samford University at 7:00 pm. The next home match for the Terriers is on Sunday October 6th when they host University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in Southern Conference play on Snyder Field at 2:00 pm.
