SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's tennis team fell in a hard fought match to the College of Charleston, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Westside Club. The Terriers played in front of over 85 people at the Westside Club to help the team gain exposure to a new audience, and display a high quality tennis match between two good teams.
With the loss, the Terriers drop to 3-3 overall while the Cougars improve to 1-1 overall with the victory.
Wofford gained the early 1-0 advantage after sweeping the doubles matches. The top pair of junior Rob Galloway and freshman Haris Poric defeated Brice Allanic and Charlie Ghriskey, 6-2, to claim the first doubles victory. No. 3 doubles pair of sophomore David Sklar and freshman Trevor Gotkowski beat Zack Lewis and Josh Record, 6-4, winning the second doubles point. Doubles pair of juniors Jackson Keith and Walker Heffron defeated Alon Faiman and Stephen Hardy, 6-5 (9-7) to complete the sweep.
In singles play, the College of Charleston would bring the game back to, 1-1, as they claimed victory in the No. 4 singles match. The Terriers then responded as Galloway defeated Ghriskey in a hard fought No. 1 singles match, 6-5 (7-4), 6-5 (7-2), to give Wofford a 2-1 lead.
The Cougars would then take victory as they scored three straight points winning the No. 3, No. 2 and No. 5 singles matches to take a 4-2 lead. At the No. 6 position, sophomore Parks Thompson won Wofford's third point beating Josh Record, 6-5 (7-2), 6-3.
Despite the loss, head coach Rod Ray was proud of his team's performance against a good opponent. "It was a great match," said Ray. "Losing close is never easy, but I was pleased with our effort and preparation. Charleston was impressive and if they had been anything less they wouldn't have won. I am proud of our team. Now it is time to get ready for tomorrow."
The Terriers return to action tomorrow afternoon, when they travel to No. 18-ranked University of South Carolina in Columbia at 4 p.m. The next home match for Wofford is on Friday, February 7, when they host Coastal Carolina University at the John E. Reeves Tennis Center at 2:30 p.m.
