PINEHURST, N.C. – Junior Cory Taylor fired a collegiate-best 6-under-par 66 in the final round of the 2014 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday, finishing top-10 and helping Wofford card a final-round 5-under 283 at the National Golf Club of Pinehurst.
Taylor's final-round surge earned the Greer native a tie for sixth place, concluding the championship at 2-over 218 (76-76-66). He climbed 20 spots from 26th place at the start of the day, posting six birdies in a bogey-free round.
The Terriers finished seventh with a three-day total 28-over 892 (306-303-283). Wofford's 5-under final round tied for the second-best round of the tournament – Furman also shot a 283 on Tuesday and Western Carolina shot a 282 on Monday – but the Terriers could not quite catch anyone in front of them to climb up the leaderboard.
The team championship went to No. 47 Georgia Southern, which shot a 5-over 293 for a winning total of 9-over 873. The Eagles dethroned two-time defending champion Chattanooga by one stroke, which also shot a final-round 293 to finish runner-up at 10-over 874.
Western Carolina went into the day with the championship lead at even-par, but posted a final-round 14-over 302 to drop all the way to fourth with a three-day total of 14-over 878. UNCG earned third at 13-over 877. Davidson (+16) took fifth, followed by Furman (+18), Wofford (+28), Appalachian State (+49), Elon (+52) and Samford (+61).
WCU did hold on for the individual championship, as 13th-ranked J.T. Poston shot a final-round even-par 72 to win the title at 10-under 206. Chattanooga's Chris Robb gave Poston a run, carding the low round of the tournament of 7-under 65, but finished two strokes shy of a playoff at 8-under 208. UNCG's Roy Dixon was third at 3-under 213.
The Terriers did all they could to try and gain a few spots on the final day. Along with Taylor's 66, freshman Andrew Novak – named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team following the conclusion of the tournament – shot a 2-under 70 and senior Chandler Brazeal shot a 1-under 71. Novak strung together three birdies at 14, 15 and 16 – starting on the 10th hole – and had a bogey-free 1-under 35 on the front to finish tied for 21st at 6-over 224 (77-77-70). Brazeal had three birdies on his round, including two through his final four holes, and completed the tournament tied for 24th with a 9-over 225 (76-78-71).
Heading into Tuesday, junior Brannan Hudson led all Terriers at 6-over through two rounds, including an even-par 72 on Monday. Hudson started the final round with a birdie, but double-bogeyed back-to-back holes at Nos. 18 and 1 and shot a 4-over 76 to finish the tournament tied for 28th at 10-over 226 (78-72-76). Senior George Perkovich tied for 41st with a 17-over 233 (77-79-77).
At the conclusion of the tournament, the Southern Conference handed out its postseason honors and awards. Novak was one of five players named to the league's all-freshman team.
Championship medalist J.T. Poston was named SoCon Player of the Year. UNCG's Carter Jenkins was named Freshman of the Year, while Georgia Southern's Larry Mays was awarded Coach of the Year.
