Box Score Game Box (pdf)CHARLESTON, S.C. – A solo home run by Seth Neely in the top of the tenth inning gave the Wofford baseball team a 1-0 victory over The Citadel at Riley Park. The Terriers even the weekend series at one game each, with the rubber match on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Wofford is 24-23 on the season and 6-13 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 19-27 overall and 5-17 in league play. It was the fourth extra inning contest of the year for the Terriers, who are 2-2 in extra frames. Both teams were limited to five hits each in the game.
The Terriers had a single by Matt Ramsay in the top of the first. A single by James Plaisted gave Wofford runners on the corners with one out, but a double play ended the scoring chance. The Bulldogs stranded one runner in the bottom of the first and the Terriers left one on base in the top of the second.
In the bottom of the second the Bulldogs had two singles, but both were stranded. Kody Ruedisili led off the top of the third with a single but did not advance past third base. The Citadel had single in the bottom of the third, but he was picked off. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the fourth. The Bulldogs added a single in the bottom of the fourth, however a double play ended the inning.
Both teams were retired in order in the fifth inning. After Wofford went down in order in the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk but the runner was stranded at second. In the seventh inning, both teams were once again retired in order. The Terriers went down in order in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, the Bulldogs led off with a single. An error fielding a bunt gave the Bulldogs runners at second and third. A fly ball and fielder's choice with the runner out at home gave the Bulldogs two outs. An intentional walk loaded the bases, but a strikeout ended the eighth with the bases loaded.
Matt Ramsay walked with one out in the ninth, ending a stretch of 19 straight Terriers retired, but a double play ended the top half. The Bulldogs led off their half of the ninth with a walk and the runner moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A fly ball and strikeout looking ended the ninth inning.
Seth Neely led off the top of the tenth with a solo home run to the left side of the scoreboard for a 1-0 lead. It was Neely's seventh home run of the season. Eric Brenk followed with a single, but was caught stealing second. With two outs, Matt Kaskow walked but was caught stealing second for the third out. In the bottom of the tenth, the first two batters were retired on fly balls. A ground out ended the game.
Wofford starting pitcher Matt Milburn went eight innings and did not allow a run on five hits with six strikeouts. Will Stillman (3-2) threw an inning and did not allow a hit with one strikeout. Eric Eck earned his tenth save of the year by going an inning and not allowing a hit.
Austin Mason started for The Citadel and threw seven innings with three hits allowed and three strikeouts. Zach Lavery went an inning and did not allow a hit with one strikeout. Skylar Hunter (2-4) gave up one run on two hits.
The Terriers conclude the series at The Citadel on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. On Monday, Wofford will travel to Presbyterian College for a 3:00 p.m. game that was added to the schedule.
