Box Score Game Box (pdf)CHARLESTON, S.C. – On Sunday afternoon, the Wofford College baseball team won 11-1 over The Citadel at Park Riley to take the weekend series. The Terriers used a strong performance from starting pitcher Luke Leftwich and twelve hits by eight different players to earn the win.
Wofford is 25-23 on the season and 7-13 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 19-28 overall and 5-18 in league play. The Terriers have won back-to-back SoCon series for the first time since 2004. Luke Leftwich did not allow a run in eight innings, while Seth Neely had two hits and three RBIs. The Bulldogs did not score until the ninth inning and were held to seven singles in the game.
In the first inning, the Terriers had a single from James Plaisted and the Bulldogs were retired in order. Wofford added a single by Conor Clancey in the top of the second and The Citadel went down 1-2-3 to end the second inning. Alec Paradowski singled in the top of the third and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, James Plaisted singled to right field and Paradowski scored for a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs were retired in order in the bottom of the third. Josh Hyman led off the top of the fourth with a single and Conor Clancey followed with a double. A ground out by Luke Feisal scored Hyman for a 2-0 lead. With runners on the corners after an error, a sacrifice fly by Kody Ruedisili made it a 3-0 game. In the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs had back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases. A ground out ended the inning with all three runners stranded.
Seth Neely was hit by a pitch to open the top of the fifth inning, but was left on second base. The Bulldogs had one runner reach base in the bottom of the fifth on a walk, but was stranded. Wofford opened the sixth inning with a hit by pitch to Conor Clancey and a single by Luke Feisal. A single up the middle by Derek Hirsch drove in a run for a 4-0 advantage. A walk to Alec Paradowski loaded the bases with one out. Seth Neely was hit by a pitch to bring in a run. With two outs, Eric Brenk reached on an error that scored two runs for a 7-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs had one runner reach base on a walk. Conor Clancey walked in the top of the seventh and Luke Feisal followed with a single by Luke Feisal. A wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position and a walk to Derek Hirsch loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by Kody Ruedisili pushed the score to 8-0. A walk to Matt Ramsay loaded the bases again and a single by Seth Neely drove in a run for a 9-0 lead at the seventh inning stretch.
The Bulldogs were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh inning. Wofford led off the eighth with a walk by Eric Brenk, but he was left on base. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the Bulldogs had a single and a hit by pitch before a strikeout ended the inning.
In the top of the ninth, Derek Hirsch walked and Kody Ruedisili had a single. A walk to Matt Ramsay loaded the bases with nobody out. A single by Seth Neely plated a run and a sacrifice fly by Eric Brenk pushed the lead to 11-0. The Bulldogs led off the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back singles. After back-to-back strikeouts, a single by Bret Hines scored the first run of the day for The Citadel. Another single loaded the bases, but a fielder's choice ended the game with the Terriers in front 11-1.
Wofford starting pitcher Luke Leftwich (4-5) went eight innings and did not allow a run on three hits along with four strikeouts. Jacob Condra-Bogan threw the ninth and gave up one run on four hits with two strikeouts.
Austin Livingston (2-6) started for The Citadel and threw four innings with three runs allowed on six hits and one strikeout. Zach Lavery went an inning and allowed three runs on two hits with one strikeout. Zach Sherrill worked an inning and gave up one run. David Rivera went two-thirds of an inning with two runs allowed on one hit. Ross White gave up one hit. Zach McKay recorded one out. Brett Tompkins threw an inning and did not allow a hit with one strikeout. Connor Walsh allowed two runs on one hit. Paul Joseph Krause went an inning and gave up one hit.
On Monday, Wofford will travel to Presbyterian College for a 3:00 p.m. game that was added to the schedule. The Terriers will visit South Carolina on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. for the final non-conference game of the season.
