Baseball Falls At South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – On Wednesday night, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 15-1 by South Carolina at Carolina Stadium.  The Gamecocks scored five runs in the second inning and added six unearned runs in the sixth to secure the victory.
 
Wofford is 25-25 on the season and #11 South Carolina is 36-13 overall. The Terriers lone run came on a home run by Seth Neely in the sixth inning. The Gamecocks had four players with two hits each. The Terrier pitching staff tied a season-high with 12 walks, while the Gamecock staff struck out eleven batters.
 
Both teams were retired in order in the first inning. Josh Hyman walked in the second inning, but a double play ended the top of the frame. Grayson Greiner opened the bottom of the second with a solo home run to give the Gamecocks a 1-0 lead. South Carolina loaded the bases on a walk and two bunt singles. A walk plated a run and back-to-back sacrifice flies made it a 4-0 game. A two-out double pushed the lead to 5-0 before a fly ball ended the inning.
 
Derek Hirsch had an infield single for Wofford in the top of the third, but once again a double play ended the inning for the Terriers. Joey Pankake led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run for a 6-0 lead. The Gamecocks left two runners on base at the end of the third. Alec Paradowski was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth inning and Eric Brenk added a single with two outs. A walk by Josh Hyman loaded the bases, but a strikeout ended the scoring chance.
 
The Gamecocks had a walk with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Grayson Greiner hit a double, but the runner at first was out in a collision at home plate. In the top of the fifth, Kody Ruedisili had a single with two outs but was stranded. South Carolina added a hit in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the runner was left on second base.
 
Seth Neely led off the sixth inning with a solo home run into the bullpen in left center field. It marked his ninth home run of the season and made it a 6-1 game. Josh Hyman added a two-out single, but was caught stealing second to end the top half. The Gamecocks led off the bottom of the sixth with Marcus Mooney reaching on an error. He moved to third and then scored on a wild pitch to make it a 7-1 game. After two walks, a fielding error loaded the bases with two outs. Back-to-back walks plated unearned runs to make it a 9-1 score. Back-to-back batters hit by pitch scored two more runs for an 11-1 advantage.  An infield single by Max Schrock drove in a run to take a 12-1 lead after six innings.
 
In the top of the seventh, Conor Clancey led off with a walk but failed to advance. South Carolina opened the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back walks.  After a single loaded the bases, a walk plated a run for a 13-1 game. The Gamecocks hit into a double play, but another run scored. An RBI single made it a 15-1 score before a strikeout ended the seventh inning.
 
The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the eighth inning. South Carolina opened their half of the eighth with a single, but a double play erased the runner. A ground out ended the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth inning, Wofford was retired in order to end the game.
 
Wofford starting pitcher Jordan Accetta (3-3) threw 1.2 innings and allowed five runs on four hits. Elliot Lance went 3.1 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits. Connor Foltyn retired the two batters he faced and had one strikeout. Jacob Condra-Bogan allowed four unearned runs. Spencer Kulman gave up one run. Merritt Huber went a third of an inning and gave up one hit and two runs. Chris Sheehan threw the final two innings and allowed one run on three hits with one strikeout.
 
Reed Scott started for South Carolina and went four innings without allowing a run. He gave up two hits and struck out four. Curt Britt (3-0) threw two innings and allowed one run on five hits. Vince Fiori and Taylor Widener each added an inning with two strikeouts. Matthew Vogel threw the ninth with two strikeouts.
                                                    
Wofford begins a three-game home series against UNCG on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. The Terriers and Spartans will also play on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
