BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Senior Taylor Baird and redshirt freshman Alyse High posted nine kills apiece as the Wofford volleyball team breezed through Savannah State in three sets (25-18, 25-16, 27-25) Sunday afternoon on the campus of Gardner-Webb.
Â
High's nine kills marked a career-high and she hit .438 (9-2-16) in the match to lead all players. Baird's nine also came on an impressive attack percentage of .368. Sophomore Ellie Tallman led the match with 11.5 points, posting eight kills, three aces and a block.
Â
Wofford (6-8) was on point with its serve, finding 14 on the afternoon to tie its season-high – the other occasion was August 30 at NC Central. Freshman Tierney Flaherty headed the effort, registering a match-high four aces. Freshman Jen Espenschied had three along with Tallman.
Â
The win improves Wofford to 10-0 all-time over Savannah State (3-9). The teams first met in 2001 and the Terriers have won in three sets in all 10 meetings.
Â
High had three of her nine kills in the first set and Wofford was off and running. The Terriers began the match on a 10-4 run to make Savannah State quickly burn its first timeout. The run was capped at 11-4 out of the stoppage when freshman Alex Holland slammed one of her four kills in the set. The Tigers scored the next four points to get within three, but it was as close as they would ever get. Wofford scored four of five to cushion its advantage to six and converted its first attempt at set point with the last of Holland's cracks.
Â
The second started 6-1 in Wofford's favor. Four of the six points came off aces – two from junior-transfer Katelynn Slade and two from Flaherty – and the Terriers led wire-to-wire to go in front by two sets. Savannah Sate used its first timeout down 17-10 when Flaherty targeted her third ace of the set. The halt in play didn't slow things down as kills by Baird and Tallman pushed the lead to 10 for the first time at 22-12 and Wofford won the second by nine.
Â
Savannah State's only fight of the match came in set three. After the Terriers went up 8-3, the Tigers went on a 10-1 run to grab their first lead at 13-9. Wofford head coach Ron Sweet let his young team of 10 freshmen play it out and did not call a timeout the entire set. Savannah State's lead reached its peak at 19-13, but back came Wofford. Baird got it started with one of her five kills in the set and the Terriers tied it back up at 22 off another of Flaherty's aces. There were ties at 23, 24 and 25, including a set point for Savannah State at 25-24, but Tallman saved the set with a kill and Baird followed to give Wofford its first crack at the match. An attack from Savannah State's Elexius Harris attempted to get the Tigers back even, but it was rejected by Baird and junior Liz Buterbaugh to end the match.

The Wofford volleyball team plays its sixth match in four days on Monday with its annual meeting against the crosstown Converse Valkyries. The match will take at Converse and starts at 7 p.m.
